Man commits suicide by jumping from Burj Khalifa

Thursday, May 12, 2011

A man committed suicide on Tuesday by jumping from the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The unnamed man, believed to be in his twenties and of a South Asian ethnicity, jumped from the 147th floor and landed on a decking area of the 108th floor. His death would be the first known suicide that has happened at the skyscraper—currently the tallest in the world—since the building opened in January 2010.

The owner of the building, Emaar Properties, released a statement saying that at 09:00 local time Tuesday, “an incident involving a male” was reported. They continued, saying, “The concerned authorities have confirmed that it was a suicide, and we are awaiting the final report.” According to witness statements taken by the police, co-workers said the man had had a holiday request denied.

Suicide rates in the United Arab Emirates are higher than several other developed countries. Workers in Dubai say they suffer from “social abuse,” facing long work hours and few days off. Chenji, a Chinese worker in Dubai, spoke to the Big News Network about the man’s suicide, saying, “It’s a desperate act.” He added, “They promise things they don’t give once you get here.”

The Burj Khalifa has been temporarily closed to visitors as a result of Tuesday’s incident.

Why Do You Need A Fitness Personal Trainer

By Chris Chew

Many people want to have a healthy lifestyle and hit the gym regularly. They work out religiously and do everything they know of to lose weight, build up stamina, and gain endurance or simply to put on nice looking muscles.

The problem is that most of them do not achieve the results that they want or even sustain gym related injuries without knowing it. Alas, this is happening too often and people just give up working out. Sad but true.

If you are not getting any results or are getting regular joint or backaches, then it is about time that you consider the option of hiring a professional fitness personal trainer.

There are a many advantages to hiring a personal trainer to help you with your fitness program and I will list a few here.

a) A professional personal trainer will assess your current physical condition and plan a training and nutrition program that is unique to your individuality with the aim of attaining your objectives.

Your instructor is educated and trained to assess what your body can and cannot physically do and will design a workout and nutritional program according to your situation.

The trainer will also professionally monitor your progress or lack thereof and tweak your training program as you go along to get the maximum result in a safe and effective way. If need be, your coach will increase or decrease the intensity of your training. This can only be done well by professional instructors who are trained to do so.

b) You will be more likely to stick to your program because you will surely see results because of the professional training you are getting. Furthermore, you would have already invested in the instructor and will want to see through the program and therefore will keep to your workout schedule.

A good trainer will also develop excellent rapport with their clients and therefore you will also be looking forward to your training sessions with your new found friend who is also a great motivator.

c) Let’s face the fact. I have personally seen many people training with incorrect forms on the exercise machines or with the free weights everyday. Unknown to them, not only will they not get results from working out the wrong way, they are also waiting for injuries to happen, sometimes permanent injuries such as joint dislocation or falling under heavy weights which may result in broken bones and torn muscles.

Also let it be known that most gym and workout injuries do not occur immediately, but are caused by wrong repeated movements every time you perform the exercises incorrectly. Thus over time, you may develop irreversible joint aches, neck and back pains without even knowing why. Most people will just blame it on working on their computers too long not knowing that their aches and pains are the results from their incorrect training habits.

Take a look at people who are using the services of professional personal trainers. Ask yourself honestly, don’t these people get their results much faster and are working out safely? Do you want to risk not reaching your goals or worse, sustain injuries that may be with you for the rest of your life?

There are many more reasons why it is wiser to hire a personal trainer’s professional services, but the above reasons should be sufficient enough to justify the advantages or the risks of not doing so.

Number of Zimbabwe cholera deaths nears 500

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

A cholera outbreak in the African country of Zimbabwe has killed almost 500 people since August, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO said that the outbreak affected most areas of the country, and that some remote areas had seen fatality rates increase by as much as 30%. Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health reported 484 deaths from 11,735 cases since the outbreak began.

Zimbabwe has had annual outbreaks of cholera for nearly a decade, but this one was the most far-reaching. A report by the WHO stated that the last large outbreak was in 1992, with 3,000 cases recorded.

Cholera is frequently spread by contaminated, untreated water. The spread of the disease was expedited by the collapse of Zimbabwe’s health and sanitation systems; state media reported that most of Harare has been left without water after the city ran out of chemicals for its treatment plant. A resident of Mabvuku, a suburb located east of Harare, told APTV that electricity is not available most of the time, so water is consumed without being boiled first.

The medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) said that there have been cases of cholera reported in areas of Botswana, Mozambique, and South Africa that border Zimbabwe, indicating the sub-regional threat of the outbreak. The South African ministry of health confirmed that they had 160 incidents of cholera reported, as well as three deaths.

The European Commission said that it was providing 9 million (US$11.4 million) in funds to assist Zimbabwe with the crisis. “I’m shocked at the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe and call upon the authorities there to respond quickly to this cholera outbreak by allowing full assistance from international humanitarians and regional partners,” said the commissioner responsible for the European Union’s humanitarian aid, Louis Michel.

Other agencies providing aid to the country include the United Nations Children’s Fund, the WHO, and Doctors Without Borders.

US government stops Haiti evacuations

Sunday, January 31, 2010

The US military has halted the evacuation of victims of the Haiti earthquake for medical care, reportedly due to uncertainty about who will pay for the costs.

A military official told the New York Times that flights to the US were stopped on Wednesday, as some hospitals didn’t want to receive the refugees.

“Apparently, some states were unwilling to accept the entry of Haitian patients for follow-on critical care. We manage air evacuation missions, but without a destination to fly to we can’t move anybody. If we don’t have permission to bring them, or they won’t take them in, we can’t fly the mission. It’s pretty simple,” US Transportation Command spokesman Capt Kevin Aandahl said yesterday. He did not say, however, which states specifically refused more evacuees.

The New York Times reports that five hundred victims of the quake have been treated in Florida so far. A spokesman for Floridian governor Charlie Crist, however, commented that he wasn’t aware of any hospitals in the state refusing to accept more evacuees. In a letter to US Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius earlier this week, however, the governor commented that “Florida’s healthcare system is quickly reaching saturation, especially in the area of high-level trauma care,” and asked for the National Disaster Medical System to be activated. That system is primarily used to help fund victims of domestic disasters.

A doctor in the earthquake-ravaged country, however, remarked that many of his patients could die if not airlifted soon. “We have 100 critically ill patients who will die in the next day or two if we don’t med-evac them,” said Doctor Green, chairman for the University of Miami’s Global Institute for Community Health and Development, to the Associated Press.

An earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.0, struck Haiti on January 12, killing as much as 200,000 people and largely destroying the capital Port-au-Prince; another million have been left without homes.

Las Vegas ‘chili finger’ woman has history of lawsuits

Monday, April 11, 2005

Anna Ayala, the Las Vegas woman who claims to have found the notorious “chili finger” at a Wendy’s outlet in San Jose, California, has filed lawsuits against other businesses, according to researchers at the Associated Press. Her previous court battles included the national El Pollo Loco chicken-chain, a previous employer, and even General Motors.

Ayala successfully won her suit for medical expenses against El Pollo Loco, after her daughter Genesis contracted salmonella poisoning from eating at the restaurant. However, Ayala lost another suit in 2000 claiming that a wheel fell off her car.

Ayala’s original account of the incident spoke “emotionally and with disgust” to the San Jose Mercury News when she described it to the paper.

“Lies, lies, lies, that’s all I am hearing. They should look at Wendy’s. What are they hiding? Why are we being victimized again and again?” Ayala recently told The Associated Press. Ayala is now in her Las Vegas home, avoiding reporters.

“It doesn’t prove anything,” family spokesman Ken Bono told the San Francisco Chronicle. “My mom has 10 lawsuits. A lot of people have lawsuits. Why would she sue for money? She has plenty of money,” he said.

Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police department, said not to expect new information in the case for at least a week.

“We just want to step back and take a deep breath,” Muyo told Knight Ridder Newspapers. “From a law enforcement point of view, once you establish it is a human finger, you have to wonder is this a case of industrial accident or is this a case of unreported homicide,” he said.

Las Vegas police searched Anna Ayala’s home on Wednesday, retrieving a cooler and other effects from her home, such as a makeup case.

Despite the incident, which has dramatically reduced sales at Northern California Wendy’s outlets, die-hard Wendy’s fans are still turning up for lunch, even at the outlet where the finger was found, at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

“We’ve eaten here for years,” a police officer told the San Francisco Chronicle under the condition that he remain anonymous. “They’re very nice people. When we work Spartan Stadium, we always eat here,” he said.

San Jose City Council candidate Andrew Diaz still eats the chili. And he witnessed the finger discovery.

“I walked away real slow,” Diaz told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I didn’t want any commotion,” he said.

Controversial medical center demolished in Buffalo, New York

Saturday, May 26, 2007

A medical center, once the site of intense controversy over abortion in the 1990s, which has been vacant for nearly 10 years, was imploded in Buffalo, New York at 6:00 a.m. [eastern time] today.

Several streets in about a 2 block radius were shut down until the implosion occurred and the dust settled. At least 200 people watched in nearby parking lots and on rooftops of buildings to get a good look at the implosion.

The ground and the walls of buildings shook as the dynamite detonated and a brief shock wave could be felt as far as 1 1/2 blocks away. Witnesses even reported small pieces of bricks and concrete falling out of some buildings, but no one was injured.

The building, owned by Kaleida Health, once housed several medical offices, including an abortion clinic. Hundreds of people protested about the abortions outside the center during the Spring of Life Movement in 1992, but other medical procedures and treatments were also part of the center’s services. It was built in 1965 and was 14 floors tall.

Kaleida Health had the building imploded so that the current Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus can be expanded. Several other major medical facilities are also in the same area including Roswell Cancer Institute and Buffalo General Hospital.

“This implosion of 50 High Street will continue the explosion of growth on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. This event will ensure future opportunity for investment, development and growth,” said the CEO and President of Kaleida Health in a statement on Thursday.

Affected By The Social Security System Americans Delay Retirement

By Jerri Lily

By the economic recession, more and more Americans to be able to receive all or more of the social security benefits and had to delay retirement plans, some of the older people still continue to engage in the heavy physical labor.

By the continued economic recession, social security benefits seems to be the only source of income their pension. However, closely related to social security benefits and retirement age, and again raise the retirement age, many people are facing house foreclosure loss, personal portfolio is down, recession and other aspects of the company’s pressure to delay retirement.

According to current U.S. social security system, people pay Social Security taxes while working, after retirement, where you can receive from the government to take Social Security benefits, the number receiving the amount, and the retirement age related. Social security benefits administered by the federal government, it helps people to maintain basic living standards.

Based in Washington, “Center for Economic and Policy Research,” John Schmitt, senior economist, said the U.S. has no mandatory retirement age, people can choose early retirement at age 62 can also be 65 to 67 years in the standard retirement age or delay the retirement age to 70.

U.S. has no mandatory retirement age, but a person’s retirement age and he received social security benefits are linked. If you retire before the age of 62, can not get anything, if the retirement age of 62 can only receive part of the social security benefits, retirement if over the age of 65, can receive standard social security benefits. If you postpone the retirement age to 70, receive Social Security benefits will be higher.

Currently, the U.S. government set up a 18 member panel to discuss raising the retirement age issue, and take other measures to reinforce the social security financial benefits. Senate Minority Leader John Boehner called for the next 20 years, retired people will not be raising the retirement age to 70 years. Many Democrats also support similar initiatives.

Based in Washington, “Urban Institute,” the researcher Rudy Panna that raising the retirement age to 70 years to be reasonable, because now people are physically more healthy, life expectancy has increased.

United States experienced a long-term severe budget problems. The budget expenditure from both a medical system, this demand is rapidly increasing, constitute the most serious budget problems, the other is the social security system. Baby boom generation is entering the social security system, their number is increasing, life expectancy will be very long, so in the next 20 years the social security system will create a heavy financial burden. This is why reform of this system is urgent now.

However, by raising the retirement age to solve the problems in the social security system is not the best approach. The economic base of the U.S. social security system for decades to come will be very sound, and then encountered problems, as long as we make small adjustments to the system, it is easy to solve, for example: as long as the workers to work to increase the proportion of tax paid during that can make up for the lack of social security benefits. Raising the retirement age to take such extreme measures only for those least prepared and the workers engaged in heavy manual labor a heavy tax burden.

Some studies show that raising the retirement age for workers engaged in intense physical labor in fact constitutes a press. “Economic and Policy Research Center,” a study that in more than 58 years of age among the workers, 1 in every 3 people who engage in intense physical labor. There are some people in very difficult working environment, some of them to face the heat and cold, wind and rain, or the invasion of pollutants, as well as the work in crowded places, or long standing case of labor.

Some experts pointed out that no matter how the social security system reform, the undeniable fact that the pressure of the economic downturn forced the Americans to postpone retirement trend is likely to continue.
