Diet Herbs: Yerba Mate, Yohimbe And Yucca

By G. Kharchenko

Yerba Mate

Yerba mate is a South American plant whose leaves are dried and made into tea or put into capsules. The herb contains vitamins A, B-complex, and C, and the minerals calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Yerba mate is usually touted as a natural upper. And for good reason: It is a central nervous system stimulant. But the herb’s invigorating or fatigue-reducing effect is due mostly to its 2 percent caffeine content.

Yerba mate is found in some natural weight-loss supplements because it is believed to help control appetite, although there is no concrete proof of this. What is known, however, is that the herb has a mild diuretic effect. As with any diuretic, supplementing with it might produce temporary water weight loss.

Potential side effects of yerba mate may include confusion, excessive urination, irritability, nausea, nervousness, and rapid heartbeat. Consumed in very large amounts, yerba mate tea (also known as Paraguay tea) may be cancer-causing. However, medical experts say the herb is relatively safe when taken in small quantities for short periods of time.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe is an herb derived from the bark of an evergreen grown in West Africa. It is best known for its aphrodisiac properties because it stimulates erection. An extract of the herb, yohimbine, is available as a prescription drug for treating erection problems.

Yohimbine is ail FDA-approved treatment for erection impairment, and it produces good results. What is less certain about the herb or its extract is its effect on fat loss. Yohimbine stimulates the release of noradrenaline (norepinephrine), a hormone that raises body temperature and helps liberate fatty acids from cells to be burned as fuel. When patients on a 1,000-calorie-a-day diet supplemented with yohimbine hydrochloride (a prescription medicine), they lost an average of 7.8 pounds in 3 weeks, compared with a control group who lost an average of 4.8 pounds. Whether or not the whole herb yohimbe produces the same effect is unclear. Still, the herb is included in some natural weight-loss formulas.

Yohimbe is considered a dangerous herb, even by herbalists’ standards. It can cause anxiety, elevated blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, headaches, painful erections, flushing, hallucinations, kidney failure, seizures, and death. The prescription form of the herb produces fewer side effects. This is one of those rare exceptions in which the raw herb is more toxic than its pharmaceutical cousin. It’s best to avoid any natural weight-loss formula containing yohimbe. In fact, the American Botanical Council, which promotes herbal supplements, has recommended that consumers avoid it. Further, the FDA considers it to be potentially unsafe.

Yucca

The yucca plant is a member of the lily family that has been used by Native Americans in the southwestern United States to treat colds, flu, indigestion, and constipation.

A 1992 article published in Health News & Reviews related the story of an anthropology professor who went on a diet of desert herbs, including yucca blossoms, and lost 30 pounds in 3 months. The truth be told, there is no scientific evidence supporting yucca as a weight-loss agent, although you may find it listed as an ingredient in some natural weight-loss products.

Yucca is probably safe in the trace amounts found in natural weight-loss supplements.

4 Excellent Weight Loss Programs}

Submitted by: Bill Perkins

Trying to lose weight can be impossible when you are not correctly doing it. Set a realistic weight loss goal and prepare to become educated in proper weight loss and nutrition. Knowing what not to eat and how just a little bit of exercise can cause dramatic effects. I composed a list below of very popular weight loss programs that not only help you lose weight, but teach you proper, safe ways to doing it. I personally like eDiets.com because of the ease of their website and the valuable information. Picking any one of these programs will help you more than you can imagine.

Weight Watchers is arguably the top weight loss program out there. It not only helps you lose weight, but also gives you the real facts about nutrition and proper exercise. Weight Watchers teaches you how to get the most out of your diet. They have clinical studies constantly to prove what really works, and more importantly, which does not. Weight Watchers has an excellent program to help lose weight because they have been in the business for over 45 years. They teach you how to eat smarter, become more active, offer support, and more. The structure of this program is very valuable and you will benefit from it probably more than any other weight loss program out there.

Another great site I stumbled across is eDiets.com. This site is perfect because it directs itself towards individual needs. Creating your own profile allows for precise control over which diet works best for you based on the information you enter. It allows you to eat what you love to eat. You can even talk to registered dieticians and fitness professionals. eDiets is a very simple site to use and has everything you are looking for in an online dieting website. They even have food plans were food is sent directly to your house to help better control what you are actually eating. Again, a worthy site you should take a look at.

A very popular diet that took the streets by storm is the South Beach Diet. This diet allows you to easily shed 10 pounds in just under two weeks. It teaches you about which carbohydrates and fats are actually good for you. Learning about proper nutrition will make you more aware of what you should stay away from. The South Beach Diet is conducted in three phases. The first phase allows you to eat regular portions of food, but eliminates the carbohydrates. Phase one focuses primarily on lean meats, fish, chicken, etc. This phase alone will allow for quick weight loss. The second and third phase deals with foods not allowed to eat and maintaining proper weight. Once you get to the desired weight, it is all about discipline and maintaining proper weight.

The last weight loss program I want to mention is the Atkins Diet. I know of a few people that really like this diet because it is EASY and works great for them. The Atkins Diet has four phases than help motivate you to wanting to live a better, healthier lifestyle. This diet is backed by many clinical studies that prove the Atkins Diet to be a very powerful weight loss program. The program will increase energy levels, minimize health risks, and more importantly help you gain control over the way you eat. The Atkins Diet is a very good program that I would recommend to anybody wanting to lose some quick weight.

Heel Pain And Treatment In Singapore}

Submitted by: Michelle Kwong

Heel pain is a common foot condition which present with severe pain or discomfort in the heel on weight bearing activities. Heel pain can get cured and recovery quickly if treated early and adequate rest. But if left untreated, pain on heel may become worse and chronic if initial symptoms are not given correct treatment.

What are the causes of Heel Pain?

Heel pain can be a condition of plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome.

Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, the soft tissues at bottom of the foot. Plantar fascia may get irritated, pain, swelling, small tears or bruises in the plantar fascia with the inappropriate pounding force on the heel. The exact cause of plantar fascia pain is unknown. The contributing risk factors for plantar fasciitis could be being overweight, prolonged standing or walking, injury, wrong fitting footwear, stepping on objects.

As a person gets older, the fascia becomes less elastic. The heel pad becomes thinner and loses the capacity to absorb as much shock. The younger people, who are more active in sports, may suffer from heel pain too.

A heel spur is an extra bony growth on the underside of the heel bone, where the plantar fascia attaches. Heel spur may develop as a result of excessive and repetitive pulling of plantar fascia on the heel bone. The heel spur may irritate into the sensitive nerves and soft tissue, resulting in pain in the foot. A heel spur can develop together with plantar fasciitis, but may also occur by itself. Heel spurs can be seen in X-rays. Heel spurs are commonly affect middle-aged patients. Athletes are also prone to heel spur due to the repetitive stress on their heels during running. With abnormal walking or running gait pattern due to mechanics of foot or when the foot regularly hits the ground in unusual ways, damage or injury can occur since tissue becomes stretched or stress excessively, indirectly leading to formation of a heel spur.

The signs and symptoms of heel pain are burning, stabbing, sharp or aching pain in the heel or along the arch of the foot. Most people would feel it first thing in the morning when step on the floor because the fascia ligament tightens up during the night sleep. Or standing up after prolonged sitting. Resting provides only temporary relief.

In most cases, plantar fasciitis/ heel spur does not require surgery or invasive treatments or procedures to stop pain and reverse damage. Conservative treatments such as physiotherapy or physical therapy are usually all that is required. However, every person’s body responds to heel pain treatment differently and recovery times may vary. Physiotherapists are specialised in treating orthopaedics condition and able to determine the cause and type of your heel pain and treat it accordingly. Standard physiotherapy pain relief treatments such as ultrasound, electrical therapy, heat treatment, soft tissue massage, can help reduce and stop most heel pain. Interferential therapy- Electrical current that stimulates the peripheral sensory and muscle nerve fibres to reduce pain and inflammation. Ultrasound-The application of ultrasonic waves causing improved. Once pain is reduced, progression to lower limb strengthening program and gait walking education.

However, for chronic long term heel pain, Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy is a most effective and latest advanced treatment that has proven to cure heel pain. This shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment which works by activating the normal body healing process by the body by causing blood vessel formation and increased delivery of nutrients to the affected area, cell metabolism and cell membrane permeability, thereby enhancing tissue healing.

Visit a physiotherapist in Singapore to treat your heel pain or plantar fasciitis early. Do not delay in seeking physiotherapy treatment as the longer delay, will take a longer time to heal or cure heel pain. Physiotherapist can be found in hospital or private physio clinic in Singapore. Physioclinic has both physiotherapy and shockwave therapy treatment, combined with trained specialised physiotherapist that can accelerate your recovery the soonest.
