FBI begins widespread financial probe of 26 firms

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The FBI is investigating 26 firms and 1,400 individuals involved in the US financial crisis for fraud and “sub-prime lending practices”. Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, Fannie Mae and AIG are among the firms being scrutinized after recently receiving federal bailouts.

Investigators, who are cooperating with the IRS, Postal Office, and other federal offices to complete their investigation, are concerned that major corporations may have also forced or bribed ratings agencies to favor them.

The probe, which is in early stages, began eight months ago when the FBI began taking a close look at the mortgage industry and widespread irresponsible loaning practices. At least one corporation has been raided, but so far no evidence of fraud has been found.

The FBI has questioned executives of each of the firms closely, and arrested two in June. An anonymous source told The Times that the firms had been ordered to “hold all papers and e-mails under lock and key” as the FBI scours the finances of each firm.

Many of the companies and individuals being investigated are at the center of the nationwide financial crisis and controversial bailout plans, and have been widely blamed for the country’s financial crisis. The investigation has come at a time when the eyes of many in the US and around the world are turned towards the financial markets, as Congress and politicians scramble to fix the crisis while the election date looms closer.

Officials told CNN that it would be a long time before the investigations were finished, adding a warning: “Don’t expect indictments tomorrow or next week or next month”.

New search engine to search inside Wikipedia

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, January 18, 2007

A new search engine that was announced yesterday finds articles and links within the English Wikipedia. Wikiseek, run by a California based startup company called “searchme”, is a website which aims to be “A better way to search Wikipedia.”

Although most keywords work without problems, Digg users have found search terms that the site does not recognize. If you enter “Chicago” for example, it shows no Wikipedia articles at all, and clicking “Chicago, Illinois” leads to an article on West Chicago, Illinois and other related articles to the subject. Similarly, entering “Christmas“, “United States” or “PlayStation 3” only provides links to related articles on Wikipedia, although they are in the top 10 of most viewed articles in the English Wikipedia. Searching “porn” comes up with commercial websites linked from Wikipedia, but not the relevant articles in the free encyclopedia. For most articles however, the relevant Wikipedia article is the first result or among the results.

The site says that “The contents of Wikiseek are restricted to Wikipedia pages and only those sites which are referenced within Wikipedia, making it an authoritative source of information less subject to spam and SEO schemes.” The site also offers a Toolbar plugin and a Firefox extension to add a Wikiseek search button inside of Wikipedia pages.

Danny Sullivan at the Search Engine Land blog found Wikiseek’s results inferior compared to the results from established search engines. SearchMe CEO Randy Adams stressed that Wikiseek is still in a beta phase. He pointed out that they welcome feedback more than the average search engine, which can be posted on their company wiki.

Searchme put a button on their main page, encouraging beta testers to instantly promote the site on Digg. In August 2006, Digg had half a million registered users.

Some media outlets have reported that Wikiseek was created by either the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia, or private corporation Wikia, which hosts a collection of wiki communities. Both rumors are untrue, says Angela Beesley, co-founder of Wikia and chair of the Advisory Board of the Wikimedia Foundation. “Wikiseek is an independent project with no affiliation with either Wikia or the Wikimedia Foundation.”

The Wikiseek site says they contribute the majority of its revenue from advertisement to the Wikimedia Foundation’s fundraising effort.

Mortgage Rates Using A Mortgage Calculator To Calculate 30 Year Refinance Cost

By John Velazco

Avoid the speculation on your refinance by using the online mortgage calculator to see how much you will have to pay up for a 30-year refinance loan term. The precision of the mortgage calculator offers you the advantage when deciding if you can or cannot afford a refinance at the moment. Calculating mortgage rates used to be the work of an experienced accountant or mortgage expert. Not now, with the advent of the Internet. Previously borrowers had no idea about all the calculations involved when they contacted a lender for home loan or a refinance. Borrowers were given the details with regard to the workings of their loans for a particular loan term, and they were prepared what to anticipate when they choose a specific mortgage rate.

However, at present the scene has totally changed and borrowers are currently equipped with the information of the different mortgage rates before contacting any lender for a loan. Borrowers at present have at their disposal the service of the free online mortgage calculator which provides a comprehensive summing up and details of your mortgage amortization for various loan terms you look into. You can work out if you can manage to pay for a mortgage right away and will help save you the trip to the several lenders just to make inquiries and find out that you can’t afford a mortgage right now.

So, what can you expect from a mortgage calculator? Well, an online calculator will provide you the following information once you have decided on the suitable loan term, monthly payment derived from the market value of the home, interest rates, down payment percentage. The results are normally derived from calculations on Private Mortgage Insurance for loans with below 20% down payment and town property taxes given that these have an effect on monthly payment for the mortgage.

The free online mortgage calculator is easy to use and will need you to key in the sale price of the home, amount of down payment, duration of mortgage, and annual interest rate. For instance, if you are getting a mortgage to finance a $300,000 home and you can just manage to pay $30,000 as down payment, and you prefer a 30-year loan term at a 5% annual interest rate. The calculator will show you that the amount financed is $270,000 and your monthly EMI will be $1,796.31 for the principal and interest alone. Press the calculate button and instantly you will have the results.

You will as well be informed on if you need to pay any Private Mortgage Insurance, which can be 0.5 to 2.75 percent of the loan amount and will differ from lender to lender. By now, you will make out if this mortgage is affordable to you or not. If you can come up with 20% or more as down payment for the mortgage amount, you can save thousands of dollars on your mortgage. Don’t be hesitant to use the online mortgage calculator since it is free and so will help you prevent the speculation by showing a comprehensive calculation of the monthly payment, interest and principal paid, and the outstanding balance year on year accurately.

Tornadoes cause millions in damages in Waco, Texas

Saturday, May 6, 2006

Early Saturday morning winds up to 90 miles per hour struck Waco, Texas and central McLennan County, United States, causing widespread damage and leaving many households without electricity.

No deaths or serious injuries have been reported; however, there is a tremendous amount of damage in 15 areas of the city, leading Mayor Virgina DuPuy to declare the city a disaster area.

The hardest hit area was Franklin Avenue, where the Coca-Cola bottling plant’s roof was peeled open as if by a giant can-opener. There were Sprite bottles spread out onto the street. The nearby Furniture Row shopping center was also hit hard. Some furniture was found as far as three-quarters of a mile away. Other hard-hit areas were Robinson, Hewitt, Woodway, and Speegleville. Densely populated Inner Waco was spared of any catastrophic damage, though hundreds, and possibly thousands, of trees have fallen, and roofs destroyed.

The main concern is restoring power to over 23,000 households and businesses. Many gas stations and grocery stores in the disaster areas were closed until power is restored. Those that remained open have had to throw out all perishable items. Also of concern is getting electricity to those with medical needs. The city has provided help to those without power at the Dewey Recreation Center.

The storm is the hardest to hit the area since the tornado that struck on May 11, 1953, which tore through downtown and killed 114 people.

Waco has seen more than its share of tornadoes recently. Only a week ago, an F1 tornado damaged many houses along Orchid and Kendall Lanes. No people were injured, though two horses were killed when their stable collapsed.

The National Weather Service confirmed this morning’s winds were a F2 tornado, where wind speeds may have reached 115 miles per hour in some locations.
