Employees of Mumbai’s bus service BEST announce indefinite strike

Friday, April 21, 2006

At least 45,000 employees of the BEST, Mumbai‘s public transport provider, are going on strike indefinitely. Workers are unhappy with changes made to wages and are concerned about their working conditions. Union leaders say the strike will end when the company rethinks its decision.

Nearly 3,300 buses will be taken off the road since talks with union leaders have drawn an inconclusive response; at least 450,000 commuters are expected to be affected by the strike. Another round of talks is expected to take place later today. An Industrial Court has termed the strike call illegal. BEST has warned employees participating in the strike that they would be faced with disciplinary action.

Sharad Rao, General Secretary of BEST’s workers union, said that “the management took this decision arbitrarily without even coming to the negotiating table. They moved to the committee to change the wages and other conditions on their own, and that is absolutely illegal. Three days ago, they have again moved to the BHT committee asking them to freeze the dearness allowance which no worker is going to tolerate”. Dearness Allowance is an inflation-linked component of wages.

“I have been on the road for the last one hour. Normally I would have just hopped on to a bus,” said commuter Mukul Chandan. Commuter Janki Patel reported, “I travel by bus everyday, but today because of the strike I have had to take an auto and its going to cost me Rs 200 just one way.”

Stocking &Amp; Hosiery Manufacturing

A narrow calf that leads down to a well-turned ankle has something that men find difficult to ignore. When the same leg is covered in a sheer stocking, ignoring it becomes practically impossible!

Women’s hosiery as we know it today — whether the tantalizing Cuban heel seamed stockings that’s carefully rolled on for those special evenings or the practical pantyhose worn to the office — are a far cry from the coarse, hand-knitted wool stockings worn by the peasants of the 17th century.

Not only have the machines invented in [when] been improved upon, a variety of style changes have also been made to women’s hosiery during the past half century.

A 1950s invention marked a temporary disappearance of seamed stockings, and the short skirts of the 1960s led to the invention of pantyhose — passion killers as far as male stocking enthusiasts were concerned.

Modern women seem to have settled on a mixture of the practical with the aesthetically pleasing, with a greater selection of pantyhose being available for day-to-day wear along with a welcome renaissance for seamed stockings.

Modern hosiery manufacturing has to accommodate the high demand for quality goods. From the finest 7 denier sheer stockings, through multi-colored and wildly patterned hose and onwards to practical 60 denier pantyhose, women want the best.

Modern stockings and pantyhose are produced on circular machines that eliminate the need for back seams by knitting tubes that are then ‘set’ to the shape of the leg. While the first circular machines produced sheer stockings with a reinforced heel pocket, modern machines have eliminated this, offering a better fit regardless of the wearer’s shoe size.

The addition of lycra to the stocking yarn is possibly the biggest break-through in hosiery manufacturing; the result being stockings and pantyhose that combine elasticity with the ability to cling perfectly to the leg.

Unfortunately, the addition of lycra to women’s hosiery has one draw-back.

“While lycra’s great,” says Janine Burke, a beauty consultant and regular customer at stockingshopping.com, “I really miss that sheer stocking effect you get with old-fashioned style stockings.” A sentiment shared by many a true stocking connoisseur.

Seamed stockings, having made a huge come-back in recent years, are still available but are manufactured using a different method — one that was used before the invention of the circular machine.

Following the original hosiery manufacturing techniques of the 30s – 50s, flat knitting is used. After the fabric has been produced, each stocking is individually seamed. The top of the seam has a ‘finishing loop’, a small hole that every seamed stocking has as a result of the machinist turning the welt — the stocking top — inside out, in order to finish off.

Once sewn, the stockings are ‘boarded’. This is a process where each stocking is stretched over a flat metal leg form and ‘set’ with steam. The knit tightens, creases are eliminated and the leg is correctly shaped.

Because the process is time consuming, seamed stockings are never cheap. Couple this with the fact that around a third of production — especially during the production of sheer stockings — is discarded during quality control and you’ll understand why.

While the women’s hosiery manufacturing process will undoubtedly continue to evolve, there will always be a demand for the sheer stockings of bygone days that are equally as loved by the women who wear them as the men who appreciate the sight of a ‘bit of stocking top’.

Hosiery manufacturing has come a long way — wear your stockings with pride!

Hundreds of SUNY New Paltz students demonstrate, storm administration building

Saturday, October 22, 2005

New Paltz, New York — More than 350 U.S. students took part in a demonstration Friday outside the SUNY New Paltz Student Union Building where student leaders used a bullhorn from the rooftop to rally the gathering on the concourse below. University police dispersed student leaders from the roof which was followed by more than 100 students storming the Haggerty Administration Building (HAB).

During the 2004–2005 academic year, students lobbied for a $10 million renovation project for their Student Union Building, which has not been renovated since its construction more than 30 years ago.

HAB spokesman Eric Gullickson said that the supplemental appropriation for the project is the largest in the history of the college and that the six-member advisory committee includes three students but that; “the Student Association, which was offered the first seat on this committee, declined the opportunity,” Gullickson said.

Student leaders, including Student Body President R.J. Partington III and Student Senate ChairJustin Holmes, who played a role in organizing this demonstration, testified during the Spring 2005 semester before the New York State Assembly Committee on Higher Education, eventually winning the renovation project. Holmes says that Gullickson’s assertions are; “an out-and-out lie. The SA was never offered such a seat. We were offered 1 seat on a seven seat committee, with the administration selecting the other six members.”

The major arguments for a capital project on the Student Union Building were that it:

  • did not accommodate organizations and organization office needs
  • lacked crucial technology for student mobilization
  • was built for a student population less than half the size of 2005, and
  • was one of the longest standing Student Unions in the SUNY system which had not undergone a renovation

During the Fall 2005 semester the HAB claimed that it would oversee the renovation project, citing the need for a larger lobby and bookstore.

The Kingston Daily Freeman reported:

The crystallizing issue for the demonstration was the upcoming $10 million renovation of the Student Union building. The renovation, scheduled to begin in about two years, will be the first major change to the building since it was built 34 years ago, according to college spokesman Eric Gullickson, who said the supplemental appropriation for the project in the state budget is the largest in the college’s history.

Gullickson also said that a six-member committee had been formed to guide the design process, but student leaders, including Partington, were told that the proposed committee would be seven members, including four non-students and two students who were appointed by the HAB.

“No matter the size and makeup of the HAB’s so-called renovation committee, it has nothing to do with the actual renovation process, which will be administered by a student committee, with input from other parties of course considered,” responded Holmes.

During the Fall 2005 semester, Student Body President R.J. Partington III attempted to negotiate with Administrators, including HAB President Steven G. Poskanzer, over the project.

The HAB refused to concede to student demands.

At this point, the Student Senate passed legislation proclaiming that the project would be overseen by a committee where students constitute a majority, and Partington announced that he “did not recognize and would not sit on” any committee that did not meet the needs of students.

Vice President of Acacdemic Affairs & Governance, Stephanie Adika said, “If the HAB won’t even listen to us about our own building, how are they going to listen to us about all the other problems the students have with SUNY New Paltz.”

British government launches car industry aid package

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

The British government has announced a £2.3 billion package of aid to attempt to support the country’s car manufacturing industry.

Lord Peter Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform announced to the House of Lords that the government planned to obtain £1.3 billion from the European Investment Bank for the industry. A further £1 billion loan is available if the industry agrees to invest it in environmentally friendly vehicles.

Mandleson told the Lords that the industry is vital to the British economy, which with “near one million employees from manufacturing to retailing” provides “£10 billion worth of added value to the economy.” However, he stressed that the government was not providing a “blank cheque” and would not provide operating subsidies.

His newly-appointed shadow Kenneth Clarke told the House of Commons that the plans were “pretty small beer” and repeated the Conservative charge that the government was “dithering” in the face of the downturn. Liberal Democrat John Thurso also expressed disappointment in the plans.

Professionals Are Opting For High Quality Emergency Sirens

byAlma Abell

Emergency sirens are an integral part of all police cars, first responder vehicles and ambulances. While there are many manufacturers out there it is important to opt for a brand and retailer that is known for trendsetting products and path-breaking features in their products. A high quality siren offers distinctive warning signals and flash patterns with utmost clarity. These sirens work in tandem with light bars and emergency lighting equipment, each enhancing the feature of the other. This means you have to opt for a brand that produces all these high quality products at affordable prices. Modern sirens are efficiently designed to offer maximum and instant output, ensuring safety of vehicle members as well as for motorists and people on the road.

The Different Options You Have for a SirenDifferent emergency vehicle sirens are designed for different and specialized purposes and actions. There are mechanical tone and electrical air horn sirens. These can be mounted on dash boards and also be operated with a hand-held console easily. Then there are remote sirens that offer control and flexibility of usage. However, most sirens today are either made or used along with flashing LED light bars which are visible from great distances. Be it a highway patrol car, an ambulance or a fire truck, this powerful lighting is a great help since roads are more filled with traffic than ever before. Some advanced models even come with hands-free tone control where the volume and pitch can be changed by the drivers themselves, even when the vehicle is in motion. These are also equipped with an instant switch-on facility that saves both time and hassle.

The Quality of Sound MattersIf you are on the lookout for emergency vehicle sirens then make sure that you check the quality of the speaker used. High quality speakers with reliable and compact amplifiers will offer maximum functionality. Easy to understand amplifier connections and simple terminal block wiring makes them desirable products for all kinds of emergency vehicles. The amplifiers output can be easily controlled as per current ambient noises to get desired results. So if there is a lot of noise one can even enhance these with 100W speakers to increase the volume. They are often combined with video camera systems and have light controlling abilities to offer a comprehensive performance all the way through. They are sleek and compact, serviceable and easy to maintain, as well. The best thing is that they are lightweight and easily portable despite their rugged looks and robust nature. The design includes water and shock proof casing, and can be hand-held or mounted. Some emergency vehicle sirens are specially designed to fit motorbikes, as well.

Bush attempts to reassure Americans in radio address

Saturday, October 11, 2008

George W. Bush, the President of the United States, has attempted to reassure Americans on the economy in his weekly radio address.

“Over the past few days, we have witnessed a startling drop in the stock market — much of it driven by uncertainty and fear,” he said, introducing the address. “Many Americans have serious concerns about their economic well-being.”

Bush then pointed out the action that the government is taking. “Here are the problems we face and the steps we are taking: First, key markets are not functioning because there is a lack of liquidity. So the Federal Reserve has injected hundreds of billions of dollars into the system. The Fed has joined with central banks around the world to coordinate a cut in interest rates — a step that should help free up credit. The Fed has also announced a new program to provide support for a vital tool that many American businesses use to finance their day-to-day operations — the commercial paper market, which is freezing up. As this program kicks in over the next week or so, it will help revive a key source of short-term financing for businesses and financial institutions.”

“Second, some Americans are concerned about whether their money is safe,” continued the president. “So the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the National Credit Union Administration have significantly expanded the amount of money insured in savings accounts and checking accounts and certificates of deposit. That means that if you have up to $250,000 in one of these insured accounts, every penny of that money is safe. The Treasury Department has also acted to restore confidence in a key element of America’s financial system by offering government insurance for money market mutual funds.”

Bush then said that there was an issue with fraud in the economy. He stated that, to address this issue, “the Securities and Exchange Commission is launching rigorous enforcement actions to detect fraud and manipulation in the market.”

Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

    Friday, August 27, 2010

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.

Water For Home Use Must Be Treated With A Conditioning System

    byAlma Abell

As a homeowner, you are using a large quantity of water on a daily basis for your own personal needs. This includes a wide range of uses such as showering, drinking water, heating your home, and running the plumbing. It only follows that the water you use should be of the highest quality and free of any contaminations. However, some of the most frequent complaints by homeowners are the mold that builds up in the bathroom, the lack of hot water, and a water heater that is not working properly. Many commercial solutions only exacerbate this problem further by using harsh chemicals that do not promote the longevity of the equipment in your house using water on a daily basis. Additionally, these chemicals can be extremely harmful for human health in the short term and in the long term.

How Can This Problem Be Fixed?

Homeowners should invest in an ecofriendly conditioning system that will treat the water for home. This refers to equipment that is environmentally friendly and will not use an excess of energy that will significantly increase the monthly hydro bill. These types of products are usually salt-free, and will act to remove hard water from your home. Hard water has a very high concentration of minerals such as limescale, and deposits these minerals very easily onto the surface of the water-powered equipment in your home.

Another key feature of this type of equipment is the fact that it requires no maintenance at all once it is installed. This means that you will not have to spend a lot of money in hiring a professional for frequent inspections. Although purchasing this equipment is more expensive in the short term, in the long term course of things you will save much more money.

Where Can This Equipment Be Bought?

You should not shy away because of a high price. Do not let that one factor alone deter you into buying a product of poor quality. The treatment of water for home is a serious matter, and is not to be taken lightly. You should be seeking out companies that have, at minimum, a solid decade of experience in the industry that has led to proven results for homeowners who have had the same problems as you. Recognition by various trades is another key thing to look for, as these are third-party unbiased companies that will not leave paid reviews for companies.

Finally, you want to make sure that these companies are easily accessible by phone or email. The contact information should be readily available on their website, and somebody should be able to answer any questions you have. If you still have doubts, ask other people in your local area for the equipment they have used that has worked for them and solved the problems they were having.
