Gun background checks a no-go in US Senate

Friday, April 19, 2013

The US Senate rejected Wednesday a bill amendment aimed at increasing the security of gun background checks, on what President Barack Obama described as “a shameful day for Washington.”

On April 10 Senator Pat Toomey, accompanying Senator Joe Manchin in announcing the amendment, said it aimed to make “it more difficult for criminals and mentally ill people to obtain guns”. The amendment would expand checks to sales online and at gun shows.

The vote followed weeks of campaigning by the President, who was supported by a speech by First Lady Michelle Obama describing his proposed measures as “common sense.”

The bill received only 54 of the required 60 votes to proceed, despite strong public support for tighter gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last year. Gun rights groups have campaigned strongly against the vote, claiming that the measures would violate constitutional rights, and targeting individual Senators with mocking material appearing online.

Other proposed amendments to the bill which endeavoured to ban the sale of assault weapons like the one used in the Sandy Hook shooting and to place limits on the amount of ammunition which could be purchased in a single transaction also failed to garner sufficient votes.

An onlooker in the gallery shouted “Shame on you” as the result of the vote was announced.

The President spoke to the press and spectators shortly after the vote was announced, passionately assuring his audience that he would continue to pursue measures to reduce the incidence of gun violence in the United States.

Having A Clear Understanding Of What Bankruptcy Des Moines Means

byAlma Abell

One of the most important things that a bankruptcy attorney brings to the table is explaining what exactly Bankruptcy Des Moines is. Most people understand that filing bankruptcy is about eliminating some of your debt. However, they are unaware of the fact that there are limitations and consequences associated with filing as well. Some people are surprised to learn that they might be better off pursuing a debt settlement than filing bankruptcy depending on their financial situation.

Deciding What Kind of Bankruptcy To File

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

Chapter 7 is also referred to as liquidation or straight Bankruptcy Des Moines. Chapter 7 is reserved for individuals who are buried under an unreasonable amount of debt. Any way you slice the debt it is not physically possible for someone to pay it off in three to five years. A lot of people consider Chapter 7 to be the better option because it wipes the slate clean. The only downside to Chapter 7 is the fact that some of your assets will be seized and liquidated in order to pay the creditors the money you owe them.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy

A lot of people consider Chapter 13 to be more responsible option. This is because Chapter 13 is about committing to a repayment plan and paying off all of your debts in the next three to five years. Chapter 13 is the option for people who still want to file even though they do not qualify for Chapter 7.

When you consult with a bankruptcy lawyer they are going to help you figure out whether or not Bankruptcy Des Moines is the answer to your problems. They are going to help you figure out what kind you should file; and then they are going to help you do all of the paperwork. Hiring a lawyer for the paperwork alone is enough of a good reason because one little mistake could end up costing you really big when it comes to filing.

Orcon New Zealand to provide television via Internet

Monday, November 13, 2006

Internet service provider (ISP) and telephone provider, Orcon Internet Limited, is going to start to provide television channels via super-fast broadband right to the customers television set. The service will be rolled out sometime next year after Telecom New Zealand has opened its lines to the competitors.

The high speed internet Orcon wishes to use is called VDSL2+ which is able to go 100 megabits per second; this is an upgrade of Telecom’s current technology, ADSL 2+. The new technology will be able to be installed when the government has opened up Telecoms lines to other ISPs. Scott Bartlett, regulatory manager of Orcon, said: “If we left this to the big telcos we wouldn’t get VDSL2+ for 5-10 years. We don’t have an existing legacy framework that limits us, so we can leap-frog them in terms of technology.”

The television channels/programmes will be delivered in high definition via IPTV, or Internet protocol television, to a set-top box, similar to those of Sky Network Television, connected to broadband.

Orcon has invested NZ$30 million into the new television service, they will be teaming up with Siemens to deliver the new television system.

Mr Bartlett said: “We are pitching to a market segment who were not necessarily totally nuts about watching the rugby live but still wanted high-definition quality television delivered by broadband.”

Orcon already has 52 channels secured, they channels will include the genres of comedy, science-fiction, news, music, weather and speaciality language channels. The movies will cost $1.00 each. And for $25 customers will be able to buy 25 channels or for $30 there will be 52 channels. For Sky television it costs $15 a week for an entry level package. “We don’t believe we have a monopoly and every channel known to man, we just think we have the ones that are important to New Zealanders,” the chief executive of Sky, John Fellet, said.

Mr Fellet said they “would like to partner with Orcon and deliver our channels over Orcon’s service, but if that did not happen, we are looking forward to competition heating up. Compete with us, that is fine. If you want to take our core product and add options yourself, that is an option as well. We have rights to rugby and movies, so whenever companies start seriously looking at it, they will look upon us as more of a supplier than a competitor.

Sky has confirmed that they have contracts to deliver IPTV via Telecom services, as Sky is planning to release an IPTV service early 2007. “For the foreseeable future, until the infrastructure improves, the satellite is the best way to deliver live rugby but if you wanted to see a game that has been played, the internet is the best way to do that, by streaming,” Mr Fellet said.

American actor Morgan Freeman in serious condition after car accident

Monday, August 4, 2008

American Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman is in reported to be in serious condition but good spirits in a Tennessee hospital following a single car accident in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi in the Mississippi Delta. The 71-year-old actor was flown to the hospital by air ambulance with injuries to one arm.

Freeman, the Associated Press reports, “has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage, but is in good spirits,” according to a statement from Donna Lee, Freeman’s publicist.

Reports say that Freeman was driving Demaris Meyer — the owner of the 1997 Nissan Maxima — when the car flipped over two or three times around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night. Meyer’s condition has not been released. Meyers is reported to be a 48 year old family friend visiting from Memphis.

According to reports, Freeman over-corrected the vehicle when he may have dozed and began to go off the highway, causing the car to flip two or three times before landing in a ditch. The accident occurred on Highway 32 just north of Ruleville, Mississippi not far from where Freeman currently resides.

Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, told the Associated Press he arrived at the accident scene soon after the accident. “They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle,” McFerrin told the Associated Press. “He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”

Freeman was one of the stars of the recent film The Dark Knight and is currently being treated at Memphis Regional Medical Center along with Meyer. Spokeswoman Kathy Stringer says that “Freeman is in a serious condition,” but did not comment further. The hospital, known locally as “The Med” is an acute care facility for up to 150 patients.

According to Sgt. Ben Williams of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, “there’s no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved” in causing the accident. He also said that both Freeman and Meyer were wearing their safety belts.

Cat5e Bulk Cables And Their Benefits

CAT5e Bulk Cables And Their Benefits

by

joshedavid

CAT5e cables are an enhanced version of CAT5 cables and in the current technologically advanced world, a new improved version called as CAT6 has also been introduced. However, CAT5e cables are regarded as the best by many users since it offers the same capacity and speed of CAT6 cables that too at a better cost. CAT5 cables has been the industry standard for voice signals and Ethernet for quite a number of year now and usage of twisted pair of high signal integrity cable for rejection of noise, this cable was the benchmark with respect to carriage of information.

As mentioned earlier, CAT5e cables are an improved version of CAT5 cables thereby adding specifications and speed for reduction of electromagnetic interference or far-end cross talk from one unshielded twisted pair to another twister pair. CAT5e cables are not only sold as small cables, but they are also sold as CAT5e bulk cables and as CAT5e 1000ft cables. Now, users might get a doubt as to whether to go for normal cables or bulk cables. The benefits of bulk cables mentioned below will be useful for the users to come to a conclusion in this respect:

Bulk cables are the best for security, video, data and voice network installation. They offer reliable and fast method of segments of stations and interconnect modules within a single infrastructure. These bulk cables not only meets, but also exceeds the TIA/EIA 568B performance of normal CAT5e cables thereby making them highly suitable for custom network installation projects. Apart from these benefits, CAT5e bulk cables are being offered in different colors like White, Orange, Light Grey and blue without any change in the cost and therefore users can choose the color that can perfectly match their home or office, wherein the cable is going to be installed.

Apart from these benefits, purchase of CAT5e 1000ft cable, which is a bulk cable enables IT administrators and professionals to inter-connect workstations, servers and modules within a network. On the other hand, when a patched CAT5 cable is purchased, it will not offer the required length and the kind of connector patching. This is the reason why some installers are selecting to purchase bulk cables in such a way that they can customize the patching and distance on both ends.

Nowadays, bulk cables are sold online and users are at their liberty to order them online, however it is essential to choose the perfect website for this purpose so that the desired result can be achieved.

Captain and four shipping companies face legal action over 2009 Australian oil spill

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

In light of an oil spill that occurred off the coast of southeast Queensland in 2009, a captain of a cargo ship and four companies are set to appear in court.

In March of last year, the cargo ship Pacific Adventurer, with Filipino national Bernardino Gonzales Santos at the helm, encountered bad weather, which resulted in its fuel tank being damaged by loose cargo, leading to the spillage 270,000 litres of oil into the Pacific Ocean. The oil later washed up on Sunshine Coast beaches as well as Moreton and Bribie islands and was dubbed “one of Australia’s worse environmental disasters” by the media.

Santos and four companies behind Pacific Adventurer face individual counts of discharging oil into the ocean and can be fined a maximum of AU$1.75 million in the case of the companies, while Santos faces a $350,000 fine if found guilty.

Santos is also charged with not taking reasonable action following the incident.

Richard Kendall, an executive of one of the involved companies, Swire Shipping LTD, said today that “[w]e are deeply regretful. But we will vigorously defend the charges […] We stand by Captain Santos, who is a first-class captain”.

Like Swire Shipping, China Navigation Company LTD and Bluewing Shipping LTD, who are both joint owners of Pacific Adventurer, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

However, prosecutor Peter Davis stated that “[t]he prosecution’s case is that the cause of the cargo going overboard was due to faulty lashings […] By failing to maintain the lashings, the defendants acted recklessly,” an act that prosecutors say should see the companies and captain pay.

Irish inflation creeps upwards to 2.4%

Saturday, June 11, 2005

The inflation rate in Ireland, as measured by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), edged upwards to hit a five month high in May at 2.4%. This represents a 0.2% rise on the previous month when the rate stood at 2.2%.

The major contributors to the rise were increased transportation, healthcare, and education costs. In April the EU25 average rate of inflation was 2.1%, with Latvia having the highest rate at 7.1% and Sweden the lowest at 0.4%.

Despite the increase in the rate, Irish inflation remains very low – having hit 7% during 2000 and remaining around the 5% until the beginning of 2003. Another major factor easing any worries about the increase is Ireland’s very strong GDP growth – expected to be around 5.5% this year

On an annual basis the cost of footwear and clothing have fallen by 2.7% whilst energy costs have soared by 10.4%. The cost of food, furniture, and communications also fell over the last 12 months.

The Consumer Price Index is made up of over 55,000 prices consisting of 613 headings which cover over 1,000 different items.
