Texas Bariatric Specialists Gastric Bypass Surgery Patient Completes Half Marathon

by

Matthew Akwei

Dr. Nilesh Patel of Texas Bariatric Specialists (TBS) is pleased to announce that less than 14 months after her

Gastric Bypass Surgery San Antonio

procedure, Jean Hickey completed a 13.1 mile Half Marathon in just three hours and nine minutes, with an enthusiastic cheering section of family and friends!

Fourteen months ago, Jean Hickey would not have even contemplated a 5k walk, let alone a Half Marathon. Jean had always been somewhat overweight growing up, but was active in school sports on the volleyball and basketball teams, and was blessed with lots of friends and a loving and supportive family. She never considered her weight a problem; her twin sister was slim and Jean was heavy that s just who I was , she says.

After high school, Jean worked for fifteen years in a fast food restaurant, then in retail, and her weight stayed fairly constant. In August 2012, looking for a career change, she took a job in a customer service center in Austin. Gradually she began sitting more and moving less, with the exception of a little walking. One day she saw a picture of herself in a swimsuit and thought I just don t look good ! In addition, she believed that her weight would eventually lead to health problems.

Researching her options on the web, she soon decided to consult Dr. Nilesh Patel of Texas Bariatric Specialists (TBS), based on his reputation and the stories of other patients he had helped. She reserved a spot in the next free seminar scheduled for the Austin clinic, then met with Dr. Patel. Other than high blood pressure, Jean was reasonably healthy, and together they decided a gastric bypass was her best means of achieving her goals. Her family, friends and boyfriend all supported her decision, promising to be there for her during and after her surgery.

After her November 2011 procedure, Jean concentrated on changing her eating and exercise habits. She tells us that she is still working to improve the quality of food she eats, trying to incorporate more lean protein, vegetables and fruit. She has protein shakes from TBS in the morning, and then eats what she terms regular food , often packing her own lunch to take to work. She is weaning herself off of fast food, as she just doesn t feel good after eating it. The only food she still misses is flour tortillas, but she is learning to love the taste of corn tortillas!

Jean tries to go to the gym most evenings on her way home from work and has been steadily building up her cardio fitness to complete a Half Marathon. She finished the entire distance and is justifiably proud of her accomplishment! Her family served as cheerleaders not only during the race, but throughout Jean s continuing journey to a healthy life!

Her co-workers have also been encouraging, One of the guys she works with commented \”You know, every time I see you I don\’t recognize you!\” And she says that every time she shows her ID, people do a double-take, as she just doesn t look like the woman in the picture!

Jean takes special pleasure in shopping. Formerly a size 26, she now fits easily and happily in to size 10 clothing. She reports that, knowing I can walk into a clothing store and get whatever I want is continually amazing to me!

Lower court in China sentences Food and Drug official to death for taking bribes

Saturday, June 2, 2007

On May 29, 2007, the former head of China’s State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Zheng Xiaoyu, was found guilty by a lower court of accepting bribes and dereliction of duty. The court handed down a death sentence along with the confiscation of personal assets. Zheng will appeal the ruling.

Zheng, 62, was determined to have accepted bribes totaling 6.49 million yuan, or US$811,200. He was head of the SFDA from 1998 to 2005. In Chinese law, capital punishment can be imposed on individuals found guilty of accepting bribes greater than 100,000 yuan, or $12,500, if “the circumstances are especially serious”.

It was revealed that, as head of the SFDA, Zheng had asked for and accepted bribes to guarantee licences to unqualified pharmaceutical companies. The companies were subsequently involved in the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit or inferior drugs. Zheng’s sentence “was based overwhelmingly on the devastating consequences of [his] crimes in his position of power,” said the state-run China Daily newspaper.

While Zheng was head of the SFDA, several health scandals in China unfolded for which the SFDA had responsibility. Dozens of deaths in China have been attributed to poor quality drugs and unsafe food products. In Anhui province, a health crisis arose from baby formula found to contain no nutrition. At least 13 babies died in the incident, which occurred in 2004. In another case, ten deaths were attributed to poor quality antibiotics.

More recently, wheat and rice gluten products from China, used in the manufacture of pet food, were found to contain melamine, which may have caused the deaths of many pets in the United States and Canada.

Zheng’s harsh sentence may be the result of China’s embarrassment by the recent scandals and its concern over international credibility. “I don’t think the government has in mind massive changes, but it clearly wants to improve official performance through a series of smaller reforms,” Mao Shoulong, public policy expert at the Renmin University of China, told Reuters.

According to an opinion piece in the China Daily, Zheng’s forthcoming execution is being used as an example to help dispel the belief, by the Chinese public, that government officials receive preferential treatment in court. “The country may need Zheng’s execution to be convinced of the leadership’s resolve to end corruption at high levels,” said the China Daily.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Aromatherapy Make Your Own In Minutes For Pennies

Aromatherapy – Make Your Own in Minutes For PenniesBy Donna Madora Mitchell

Perhaps the best thing about aromatherapy is that it is so easy and pleasurable to engage in; both for the creator of the concoction and most assuredly for the client. Few people will complain about receiving a prescription to bathe with scented oils or apply a fragrant body oil; two of the most popular aromatherapy techniques.

If you are considering starting an aromatherapy business for yourself–before you get started in this astonishing world of scent, it is important that you find out what practicing aromatherapists are doing so you can find that perfect niche for yourself.

Today many herbalists, body workers, cosmetologists, chiropractors and other holistic healers are discovering how multifaceted and versatile the healing art of aromatherapy is. To this end they are able to enrich their practices by introducing these pure essential oils for a compendium of maladies like: the altering of moods, stirring memories, arousing sexual desire and generally improving the quality of life. Many others concentrate on enhancing their client’s beauty and longevity by offering them a wide variety of healing beauty products.

The majority of our nation today is influenced by the economy–finding most people today going both ‘green’ and back-to-basics. However, as natural as they wish they could be, the majority live in a stressful world and are constantly on the lookout for natural alternatives for health challenges like depression, anxiety, fear, grief, loneliness, mental fatigue, mind fog, insomnia, PMS symptoms and so many more. The peace and tranquility that should manifest themselves as normal attributes are often weighed down by environmental factors such as stress in the workplace or–even worse–unemployment. Many others suffer from social isolation, poverty, chemicals and toxins or even poor diet and countless more conditions.

Aromatherapy is BIG business today and at the end of this article you can be assured that we keep our promise that you will never have to pay mega-bucks again! This article is more than an overview of this ancient 3000+ year old art. As you stroll down Lavender Lane’s aromatic healing path with us you will discover how–for more than a quarter-of-a-century we have been teaching and sharing how you can create a compendium of natural and therapeutic aromatherapy concoctions in mere ‘minutes for pennies’. Plus, should you desire to retail your products at craft fairs or onto store shelves or in spas or even mail order like us; we will happily show you how. We will also share with you one of the most important phases of your marketing–how to package your concoctions–making you appear as professional as is your creation.

First, here is a ‘crash course’ on aromatherapy that the ‘newbie’ should at least have some concept of. Each essential oil contains numberless chemical components. To best illustrate a comparison, take an apple for instance. FACT: One, whole, clean, fresh apple contains over 10,000 nutrients in combinations of antioxidants, phytochemicals (plant vitamins) enzymes and more. Yet science so far has only recognized a fraction of them, and until more are discovered; they haven’t got a clue what the rest of them are or what they do–and apples have been around since the beginning. Aromatherapy (the art of implementing an essential oil to this end or that) has been around since people have. Nevertheless, each type of essential oil is composed of many different aromatic molecules of which more than 30,000 have been identified and named, and it is common for a single essential oil to contain one hundred different aromatic molecules. One can only fathom their countless true complexities and their inconceivable properties or restorative benefits.

Exactly how aromatherapy works is still unclear. What we do know is that merely smelling a fragrance can influence us physically and emotionally by altering hormone production, brain chemistry, stress levels and general metabolism..

An ‘essential oil’—or the ‘soul’ of the plant if you will, is 50 times more concentrated than that of the herb or flower it was carefully extracted from. Essential oils give plants their characteristic odors, enabling us to take deep drafts of a fragrant rose bloom or drink in the perfume of lilacs and lavender. It is because essential oils are by their very nature aromatic, that the therapy involving their use has been christened “Aromatherapy.” And whether a person is looking to enhance their beauty, relieve pain, increase energy, reduce stress, grow hair, promote sleep, heal wounds, evoke special emotions, or even kill fleas–there is an essential oil for all these and countless other conditions.

BEAUTY SECRETS? Billions of dollars a year are spent every year by consumers who are trying to slow down the aging process–or at least cling to as youthful an appearance as they can for as long as they can. The face is usually the most exposed part of the body–bombarded by heat, cold, drying, sweating, wrinkling, dirt, smoke and a world of other invisible toxins. Today especially, stress is on the increase, having a huge impact on most people’s lives. And as such, takes a great toll on the body which is very much mirrored in the face. If the consumer is looking to enhance their beauty they must take special care of it and there is a compendium of products that can be incorporated into their regime–each of which contains the right essential oil(s) to meet their purpose.

These products are found in the forms of cleansers, steams, exfoliants, masques, toners, floral waters, moisturizers, bath oils, massage oils, and more. When these pure essential oils are added into these mediums (carrier oils, waxes, sea salt, lotions, floral waters, butters, soaps, etc.) the essential oils penetrate to the dermal layer of the skin where new cells are developing. And depending upon which essential oil is used in which application, their varied attributes will either stimulate and regenerate skin cells, reduce bacterial and fungal infections such as acne and other related skin problems, soothe delicate, sensitive, inflamed skin, promote the release and removal of metabolic waste products, and produce healthy skin cells quickly following sun damage, burns, wrinkles or healing of wounds. Additionally, these essential oils contain plant “hormones” that help balance and alleviate hormonally related skin problems. When incorporated into a bath or massage, or through inhalation, these essential oils may be of aid in the relief of muscle pain, menstruation, lung congestion, insomnia, fever, headaches, infections, indigestion, constipation, etc.

Scent and the psyche too is nothing new. The manipulating of fragrance to affect the emotions dates back to the ancients and today is no different. According to a 1992 issue of the British Journal of Occupational Therapy, it describes the potential of aromatherapy to “promote health and well-being”. In hospital environments, patients receive aid through massage, inhalation, baths, compresses, creams and lotions. According to the journal’s extensive list of potential uses, aromatherapy can diminish stress, sedate, relieve depression, invigorate, promote activity and alertness, stimulate sensory awareness, facilitate interaction and communication, treat certain medical problems and provide pain relief.

Scent is an integral part of society. From the time we get up we are accustomed to bathing or showering with a scented body soap or gel, a fragranced shampoo and/or conditioner, followed by a scented deodorant and then perhaps by a scented after-shave, perfume or cologne. Our cleaning supplies are laden with scent to make our clothes, our dishes and our houses smell fresh and clean. We buy scented candles, incense, oil lamps and potpourris that we may be surrounded by aromas. Yet—these are probably ALL synthetic in nature.

“Pure” essential oils are extracted right from the plant, wherein any allergies usually associated with fragrance are almost non-existent. It is the “synthetic” fragrances that create many problems. With the rise of synthetic chemicals, and the increased strength of these fragrances, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that 4,000 different chemicals are currently used in fragrances–most of which are in perfumes and colognes and is on the increase. The problem is that through the inhalation of “synthetics”—many suffer a wide range of physical difficulties from sinus pain to anaphylactic shock and seizures. This fact alone should be reason enough to educate people toward the incorporation of “pure essential oils” over synthetics–especially if they could make their own sweet scented body and skin care products as well as their own therapeutic concoctions.

NOTE: Please be assured that there is MUCH ADULTERATION out there due to a general lack of education coupled with greed as to essential oils versus the synthetic fragrance oils–and that is why it is doubly important that YOU, John & Jane-Q-Public become educated of these important differences.

So that the beginner will not be overwhelmed or confused as to how aromatherapy works–here is an easy to visualize, easy to understand example of how these pure healing oils get into the blood-stream–do their thing–and get out. We all know how good garlic is for the body–curing a compendium of ills. Take a clove of garlic, cut it in half and rub the soles of your feet a couple of times. Put your socks and shoes on and go about your business. In about 3 hours you can taste it. That’s it. When you bathe, your body’s pores open to receive these healing oils, as does your body react accordingly through massage or through inhalation. Studies with brain wave frequency has shown that smelling Lavender increases the alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with relaxation. The fragrance of Jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the head, which is associated with a more alert state.

Aromatherapy is sweeping the world like wildfire and as we journey through this enlightening article; if the reader believes that this healing skill is something that they would like to incorporate into their lives as well as that of others; we highly recommend you consider this avenue.

There has been a good deal of information passed on to you so far and before you view the essential oil list, the intention of this article is to share with its readers that they or their families or friends may seek aromatherapy to allay their respective problems, and that they absolutely can–and never need pay mega-bucks again for these therapeutic and exotic preparations.

The following is but a smattering of the most commonly used essential oils and some of their numerous uses. Note: These oils are recommended for external use only.

LAVENDER for stress, muscle pain, headaches, prevents scarring, stretch marks and has a reputation for slowing wrinkles, etc.

ORANGE for high blood pressure, treating flu, colds, congestion and for killing fleas…

ROSE GERANIUM for reducing inflammation, infection, eczema, acne, burn injuries, scarring, stretch marks, regulation blood pressure, etc.

PEPPERMINT for headaches, muscle spasms, inflammation, indigestion, nausea, congestion, etc.

ROSEMARY for memory, poor circulation, low blood pressure, sore muscles, rheumatism, cellulite, etc. (And-balding. However, you have to have a little life left up there.)

EUCALYPTUS for sinus & throat infection, fever, flu, herpes, acne, boils, insect bites, lice, herpes, vapor rubs, aftershaves, colognes, etc.

LEMON oil for viral & bacterial infections, hypertension, water retention, weight gain, bruises, increasing general well-being, etc.

TEA TREE oil for insect bites, cuts, sunburn, shingles, candida, diaper rash, earaches, acne, paper cuts, head lice, abrasions, scalds, herpes lesions, ringworm, athlete’s foot, boils, eczema, and much, much more.

SAFETY: Overexposure to essential oils, either through the skin or by nose, can result in nausea, headache, skin irritation, emotional unease, or an overall “spaced out” feeling. Getting some fresh air will help you to overcome these symptoms.

Just to show you how easy recipes can be–here are some examples:

For thousands of years the ancients established elaborate rituals that combine hot and cold baths, ointments and aromatic massages.

THERAPEUTIC BATH SALTS1 cup Dead Sea Salt (course or fine grind).

Add 25-35 drops of essential oil or oils depending upon what therapeutic oils you have chosen for what malady. If you have chosen a blend you need to consider that each oil has a high-note, middle-note or base note which is the evaporation time; so the end scent may change from what you smell during preparation.

1 tablespoon ‘Turkey Red’ oil which is water-soluble. Almost all oils float, but not this one. Instead it will marry with the bath water and soothe and moisturize your body.

If you choose to color your salts use a few drops of food-safe food coloring until the desired color is attained.

If you choose to make a fine grind all you need to do is put the salts in your blender and blend. It won’t hurt your blender a bit and I prefer to grind before I add the other ingredients.

Mix everything well and package. Be sure to use a pretty, wide-mouthed container and then package accordingly. Remember–presentation is as important as is the creation itself.

Depending how much water is in the tub–add 1/2 to 1 cup per bath. Once mixed in the bath, the salt will melt, the color will dissipate, the ‘Turkey Red’ oil will soothe and moisturize, and the essential oils will penetrate your body within minutes. Additionally, by the very inhalation of the chosen oil(s) and the fragrance, it will either relax your or invigorate you. This application is wonderful because your skin is the largest organ of your body.

SALT SCRUB:

For those who prefer showers, these are great exfoliants. (Do not use on the face).

To 1 cup of fine Dead Sea salt add 25-35 drops of essential(s) and enough carrier oil (Safflower, Grapeseed, Olive, Turkey Red, etc.) to totally moisten the salt. You don’t want it too dry and you don’t want it too runny. Rub on to loosen all those dead cells and invigorate the new ones, then wash off.

SUGAR SCRUB:

Using the above recipe, instead of salt use raw sugar. We use turbinado.

HEALING MASSAGE AND BATH OIL:

To 16 ounces of carrier oil (Turkey Red, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, etc.) add approximately 160 to 200 drops (total) of essential oil or oils. This equates to 16-20 drops per ounce. Shake well and let the oils marry overnight. For a bath oil use approximately 1/4 cup of oil. The carrier oils may be mixed and matched.

NEVER PAY MEGA-BUCKS AGAIN!

As we hope you have discovered, most of these natural, healing and therapeutic creations are very simple to make for you and your family and friends–and they make awesome gifts too.

Retired U.S. vets sue Donald Rumsfeld for excessive service cutbacks

Tuesday, May 31, 2005

One thousand residents of the Defense Department-managed Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. filed a class-action lawsuit on May 24, asserting that the cut-backs in medical and dental services imposed by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld are illegal. The operating budget for the home was reduced from $63 million in 2004 to $58 million for 2005. The residents cite cuts in on-site X-ray, electrocardiogram, physical and dental services, and the closing of the home’s main clinic and an on-site pharmacy.

Chief Financial Officer Steve McManus responded that the changes not only save money but also achieved improved efficiencies. “We’re really trying to improve the benefits to our residents,” he said.

Most of the home’s costs are paid for by a trust fund and monthly fees paid by residents. By law, the Armed Forces Retirement Homes are required to fund, “on-site primary care, medical care and a continuum of long-term care services.”

Technological University Dublin senior lecturer Dr Lorcan Sirr speaks to Wikinews on housing market in Ireland

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

Wikinews correspondent J.J. Liu spoke with Technological University Dublin (TUD) senior lecturer at the School of Surveying & Construction Management, Dr Lorcan Sirr on Friday regarding the supply of housing in the Republic of Ireland and relevant parallels across the rest of Europe, as well as recent developments by the government and private sector that are causing a rise in rents and home prices in the Irish real estate market.

Dr Sirr is a regular contributor to The Irish Times and has provided commentary to Irish radio station Newstalk, national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) and various other publications. In addition to being a chartered planning and development surveyor and assessor to the Society of Chartered Surveyors, Dr Sirr is a Peace Commissioner and former external examiner for the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, according to his profile on Worky.

Greek parliament votes in favor of new Papandreou cabinet as debt crisis deepens

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou survived a confidence vote by the Greek parliament late Tuesday night, thus allowing Papandreou to form a new cabinet constituted to address Greece’s severe financial debt crisis. The vote’s outcome is viewed as a measure of confidence in the government’s ability to resolve the problems of the deeply-indebted nation and implement the stringent austerity measures necessary for Greece to receive future bailout packages from the European Union (EU).

Papandreou managed to face down internal dissent within his own Panhellenic Socialist Movement over the extremely unpopular austerity measures (he has said the measures are an issue of “life or death”) and the final vote of 155 to 143, with two abstentions, matched Papandreou’s 155 seats. Meanwhile, Greeks were angrily demonstrating against the measures outside, throwing bottles at the parliament building as riot police stood by.

Following the confidence vote, Greece will be in a position to look for further financial aid from the EU to avoid defaulting on its enormous debt, but help from the EU is dependent on the real work that must be done first: the Greek parliament’s implementation of the hugely unpopular austerity measures.

Government spokesman Elias Mossialos said in an interview with Skai Television before the vote that Greece will be unable to pay wages and pensions after July 15 if the government does not secure the EU financing.

Nothing has been done to enhance growth. No single [Greek] indicator has shown strength.

The vote came in the midst weeks of widespread anti-austerity protests and strikes in major cities throughout Greece, involving clashes between police and demonstrators angry with the proposed slew of layoffs in the public sector which are to accompany the Socialist cabinet’s program.

On Wednesday, Pimco, the biggest bond fund in the world, said it was unimpressed with Tuesday’s vote of confidence, saying it believes Greece and perhaps other European economies will ultimately default on their debts. Mohamed El-Erian, chief executive of Pimco, said, “Nothing has been done to enhance growth. No single (Greek) indicator has shown strength.”

We have a unique opportunity [to change the country]. If we falter, if we lose heart and squander it… history will judge us very harshly.

“For the next three years, we’re going to see different economies work out different problems. For European economies, especially Greece, it would be through default,” said Mohamed El-Erian in a video conference.

The euro fell against the dollar on Wednesday as financial markets indicated that the eurozone debt crisis is far from over.

George Papandreou gave an emotional speech to parliament on Wednesday, saying “We have a unique opportunity (to change the country). If we falter, if we lose heart and squander it… history will judge us very harshly.”

Meanwhile, when the new austerity measures move to parliament for a vote, Greece’s major unions are planning to hold a 48-hour general strike.

Three Tips To Choosing A Plastic Surgeon

Three Tips to Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

by

Andrea Avery

Choosing a plastic surgeon is one of the most important steps you can take in your ability to change the way your body looks and feels. Though you may not realize it, this one person could make all of the difference in the outcome of your procedure. The reason for this is simple. Though these procedures are very specific, there is a level of talent necessary to ensure that the patient gets the look and feel that is right for their needs. You want a pro that is able to help you to look the very best.

Get to Know His or Her Past

One of the best ways to find a plastic surgeon that is right for you is to simply look for a professional who has a strong reputation and a history of doing good work. You want to find out not only if he or she has experience but also what type. These doctors need to have a license to perform any type of procedure, but it also helps to know they have extensive experience working on the types of procedures you want and need to have done. Turn to a specialist for procedures like breast augmentations or tummy tucks.

Learn About Education

You know that the doctor must obtain the appropriate medical degree to provide these services. You know he or she must have a license, too. Some also are a member of the board of plastic surgery, which is a very good thing. Beyond this, though, you want to be sure the individual has the most up to date education and training. Is he or she using the latest treatment options or the same ones for the last ten years? You want the least invasive and most successful options available to you.

Do You Like the Doctor?

During a consultation, you will be able to get to know this plastic surgeon and find out if you really do like him or her. You need to like this professional. Gamespy, IGN award Galactic Civilizations II expansion Editors’ Choice

Thursday, February 15, 2007

Plymouth, Michigan, United States – This week, independent software developer Stardock released Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar, an expansion to their PC turn-based strategy game Dread Lords. Industry websites IGN and GameSpy responded with Editors’ Choice awards, while UGO gave it an A. The expansion had previously been named as one of GameSpy’s Most Wanted Games of 2007.

Reviewers cited the significant increase in customization options, better artificial intelligence, and an improvement in graphics quality as decisive factors. UGO’s Adam Swiderski noted that “if creating a fleet of death-dealing starships sounds like fun to you (and it really should), this is your dream playground,” while GameSpy’s reviewer suggested that “after a week of playing Dark Avatar, you may forget Master of Orion altogether.” Criticism mostly revolved around “uninspired” ground combat, a too-generic tech tree, and the continued lack of multiplayer support.

The original game received some publicity for its lack of copy protection, but gained far more by the actions of a StarForce forum administrator, who made a post linking to an illegal BitTorrent download of the game. StarForce developer Protection Technology later claimed this to be a poorly-considered attempt to demonstrate the result of not using their software, which is designed to prevent software piracy. The result was a media backlash against the company, including satirical commentary by gaming webcomic/blog Penny Arcade describing the action as “extortion.” Its writer, Jerry Holkins, asked that “publishers distance themselves from a company that has shown such contempt for their industry.”

The expansion is available as an online purchase in CD or digital download form through Stardock’s gaming subsidiary, TotalGaming.net. A compilation of the original and expansion has also been released as Galactic Civilizations II: Gold Edition and is available in stores, say Stardock. Their retail game releases still contain no copy protection, but online activation is required to download updates.
