Northern lights may appear across Canada and northern U.S. late Tuesday night

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Forecasters predict that northern lights could be visible to the naked eye late tonight and early tomorrow morning across Canada, northern parts of the U.S., and possibly the United Kingdom.

Solar storms caused a large ejection of plasma from the Sun’s surface on Sunday, and the plasma is heading directly towards Earth. The plasma, a cloud of rapidly moving hydrogen gas atoms and subatomic particles, is expected to reach us late Tuesday. The plasma will interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, which will cause northern lights, or aurora borealis, to be visible much further south than is usual. Northern lights usually appear as green or red rivers of lights across the sky.

“It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time” said astronomer Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The eruption was detected by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which was launched in February 2010, and is currently orbiting the Earth.

The Sun goes through approximately eleven-year long activity cycles, with the last maximum occurring in 2001. Sunday’s eruption is a sign that the many years of inactivity is over, and the Sun is heading towards another maximum.

Holocaust survivor publicly forgives 93-year-old Auschwitz guard during his trial

Thursday, April 30, 2015

On Friday, Eva Mozes Kor, a 81-year-old Auschwitz concentration camp survivor, publicly forgave and embraced 93-year-old former SS guard Oskar Gröning, who is currently on trial in Germany as an accessory to 300,000 murders of Jews at Auschwitz.

Kor, who was among many Jews medically experimented on at Auschwitz, has thanked Mr Gröning for answering to the crimes he aided during his time as an Auschwitz guard.

Kor is amongst a number of Auschwitz survivors attending the trial who have joined the prosecutors as co-plaintiffs in the case against Mr Gröning. While Kor has forgiven Mr Gröning, she still holds him liable for his involvement during the Holocaust, as she did last week when she testified against him. Other survivors have recently spoken out about the trial; survivor Eva Pusztai-Fahidi said on Tuesday the trial itself against a former SS guard matters more than the end punishment.

During the first day of Mr Gröning’s trial, he denied any direct role in the killings, though he did admit to having witnessed them. Mr Gröning said he shared “moral guilt” for the crimes, regardless of whether his actions make him criminally guilty.

The prosecutors have argued that serving as a concentration camp guard is legally accessory to the act of murder. Mr Gröning is reportedly one of three remaining former SS guards that have been identified for trial. If found guilty, the former SS Guard could reportedly face up to fifteen years in prison.

Shopping For Diamond Rings: Something For Every Occasion And Budget

byAlma Abell

Though often associated with engagement rings, Diamond Rings can be a special piece of jewelry for anyone. They’re often bought as gifts for anniversaries, holidays, and other milestone celebrations.Engagement rings are typically what people think of when they think of a diamond ring. This variety of diamond ring is usually a solitaire, but may be flanked by some smaller diamonds or have pave diamonds along the band. This is a showcase piece- where the diamond is front and center, and meant to make a statement.

Eternity bands are another kind of diamond ring. This style has mid-size or smaller diamonds which are bezel or pave set into the entire circumference of the band. Because of the eternity symbolism, people often favor this style to give as a wedding anniversary gift.

Fashion diamond rings come in a variety of styles and are meant to be worn for the joy of wearing a diamond ring. They may be pave set into abstract designs or popular forms like hearts, flowers, bows, or luck symbols. Other popular styles feature animals, monogram initials, and birthstone rings.

Diamond rings may be a solitaire or multiple diamonds, which may be bezel or pave set, or set in one of many styles of prongs. Diamonds may be cut into various shapes, with the more popular ones being round, princess, and cushion cuts.

The most affordable rings are usually made with raw diamonds. Raw diamonds are essentially straight out of the earth, with little or no polishing or cutting. They may be cut into a specific shape, but otherwise they’re left natural. These kinds of rings don’t suit everyone, but they have a unique, organic look that many people like.

Other diamond ring prices depend on the size, quality and cut of the stone. The most expensive diamonds will have no inclusions, will be clear, expertly cut, and have an intense sparkle to them. The bigger the carat size, the bigger the price tag. Due to their rarity, colored diamonds such as pink, blue, and canary will also have a higher cost so long as the stone is decent clarity.

Diamonds that might have a couple inclusions or slight cloudiness will take the price down, and can still make for a great piece of jewelry. Those who are shopping for a diamond ring for any occasion may check jewelry stores, estate sales, boutiques.

United States: New York City mayoral swear-in to pair potential 2020 presidential prospects

Sunday, December 31, 2017

On New Years Day 2018, on the steps of New York City Hall, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, runner-up for the Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination and potential 2020 presidential candidate, is to conduct the swearing-in of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, himself a potential 2020 presidential contender. In a statement, de Blasio, who was re-elected as Mayor this past November, claims to have invited Sanders due to the progressive icon’s Brooklyn, New York roots and advocacy on behalf of working people. Analysts say the invitation is a calculated political move on behalf of de Blasio to take advantage of Sanders’ popularity.

Sanders, 76, a self-identified Socialist, was born in Brooklyn before relocating to his current home of Vermont. After running for various public offices in the 1970s as a member of the anti-war Liberty Union Party, Sanders won election as Mayor of Burlington in 1981, serving three successive terms. In 1990, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as an Independent, serving for 16 years before winning election to the U.S. Senate, again as an Independent. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Sanders garnered grassroots support, finishing second at the Democratic National Convention to Hillary Clinton, whose husband, former President Bill Clinton, administered de Blasio’s oath for Mayor in 2014.

Sanders’ 2016 performance and ensuing popularity within the Democratic Party has led to speculation about his plans in 2020. According to Politico, Sanders is taking steps toward a 2020 run. Referencing Sanders’ advanced age, incumbent President Donald Trump, who has already announced plans to run for re-election in 2020, said he expects Sanders to run “even if he’s in a wheelchair.”

News outlets have also speculated about de Blasio’s 2020 prospects. Last week, de Blasio delivered a speech in the first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa, prompting publications such as The Week and Newsweek to discuss whether the speech, delivered before about 200 progressive activists in Des Moines concerning the direction of the Democratic Party, was a way for de Blasio to test the waters for a potential run. De Blasio himself has denied he is running for President, though speculation persists.

Congressman John Delaney of Maryland is currently the only prominent Democrat officially running for President. Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are also expected to run.

Belgium stops telegram services

Saturday, December 30, 2017

After 171 years of existence, telegram services were permanently stopped in Belgium as of yesterday. The service was launched in 1846, and about 9000 telegrams were sent across the country from January 2017 to November 2017.

On December 12, Belgian telecommunication company Proximus, who provided telegram services in the country, announced they “will definitively end [our] telegram service” on December 29. Jack Hamande, board member of the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications, said, “It is mainly 10 customers using the telegram in Belgium today […] in finance, judicial services and insurance”.

The first telegram line was laid from Belgium’s capital Brussels to Antwerp. Usage of telegram has decreased enormously over the decades. According to Proximus’s statistics, about 1.5 million telegrams were sent during the early 1980s, with many telegrams coming from Italy, but the number dropped to fifty thousand in the early 2010s. Sending a twenty-word message via telegram in Belgium would cost around €16 (about US$19). Hamande said, “Most of the current users of telegram will shift to registered mail […] we see no reason to force the company to maintain this service.”

Telegram is still functional in Italy. It was invented in Great Britain in the 1830s, but was stopped there in 1982. The United States stopped telegram services in 2006, and the last telegram in India was sent on July 14, 2013 which began in 1850. In the mid-1980s, about 600 thousand telegrams were sent across India each day.

“If you ask young people […] they don’t know what a telegram is”, Hamande said.

3 Benefits To Stainless Steel Jewelry In Wayne, Nj

byAlma Abell

Jewelry is an important part of any outfit. It’s more than just an accessory. For many men and women, it is part of the wardrobe they can’t live without. While there are lots of different types of jewelry to choose from, the material that it is made out of is a big factor in determining its look as well as its durability. Here are three benefits to stainless steel jewelry in Wayne NJ that are continuing to lead to its increase in popularity.

Corrosion Resistance

One of the biggest concerns when it comes to jewelry is corrosion. Rust and oxidation take away from the appearance of a metal and can cause a beautiful piece of jewelry to be something that never leaves the jewelry box. Stainless Steel Jewelry in Wayne NJ resists corrosion and provides a longer lasting piece that isn’t going to be marred by things like rust or oxidation. As an added bonus, because it isn’t plated with anything, it there is no need to worry about things like chipping or even fading.

Stronger Material

For those people that tend to put a real strain on their jewelry, stainless steel offers a strong material base. Think about how much something like a ring or a bracelet comes into contact within a day. From bumping it up against a desk or table to catching the clasp on an article of clothing, some pieces tend to really get tough treatment. Stainless steel is a durable material that can easily stand up to this type of wear and tear. Because it is hard and lasts a long time, it is often used on things like keychains.

Sensitive Skin

It’s frustrating to love the way a piece of jewelry looks but know that it will affect the skin in a negative way. Those with sensitive skin or any type of allergy to gold and silver can feel limited in their accessory options. But once again, stainless steel comes to the rescue. In general, it is considered hypoallergenic. This can offer a real solution for those that often experience discomfort when wearing other types of jewelry.

In addition to its corrosion resistance, strength, and solution for sensitive skin, this type of jewelry is also an attractive option. Contact us to learn more about the benefits of stainless steel jewelry.
