Fifteen receive US Presidential Medal of Freedom

Thursday, February 17, 2011

US President Barack Obama presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to fifteen people Tuesday, including former US President George H. W. Bush and current Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel. The award—the US’s top civilian medal—is given to those who have made “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

The fifteen medal recipients were chosen in 2010, but not all of them were present to receive the award at the White House Tuesday. Merkel did not attend the ceremony, and the award for Tom Little was given to his wife because the winning optometrist had been killed in August while working in Afghanistan. The medal recipients “reveal the best of who were are and who we inspire to be,” said Obama.

The other winners are: John H. Adams, environmental advocate; Maya Angelou, poet and author; Warren Buffett, billionaire executive and philanthropist; Jasper Johns, contemporary artist; Gerda Weissmann Klein, Holocaust survivor; Yo-Yo Ma, cellist; Sylvia Mendez civil rights activist; Stan Musial, retired St. Louis Cardinals baseball player; Bill Russell, retired basketball coach and Boston Celtics player; Jean Kennedy Smith, diplomat and disabilities advocate; and John J. Sweeney, former president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

Ideas For Marble Patio Designs

byadmin

Planning a new patio space in your home is a very exciting time. While in the past patios tended to be rather small and typically square or rectangular in shape, today they are true outdoor living spaces with their own unique designs. A marble patio, or a travertine patio, is a great option for any shape, theme, or style of patio you are considering.

One of the reasons a marble patio is such as good option is that it is a durable, natural product. As many consumers are increasingly aware of green construction and environmentally friendly products, it is worth noting this patio will last a lifetime. You will never have to replace it and, with minimal care, it will keep looking beautiful, natural and inviting throughout decades of use.

Unique Combinations

With a travertine or marble patio there are unique combinations and design opportunities to consider. For instance, you can select a very uniformly colored marble with minimal lines and colored veins throughout the tile. This will provide a cool, classic look which is also great for modern or European styles of designs.

A marble patio featuring the bolder patterns and designs of rich reds, golds and blues and grays, often inviting an impression of the waves of the sea or the leaves in the fall can add drama and highlight the colors of your home.

Another option is to choose a tumbled marble patio paver with significant and noticeable color variations. This will create a pattern within the tile itself which will be unique to your patio, deck or poolside area.

Traditional Design

A very traditional type of tiling pattern for a travertine and square feet, with the result being a layout of tiles with a subtle repeating pattern without the straight lines associated with traditional tiling options.

Regardless of the colors or the tiling pattern you select, you will love your marble patio and pool area. As a true investment and beauty that is also very practical, you will enjoy your pool area for casual events and entertaining, and your marble pavers will always match your event style perfectly.

Fiery collision between prison van and truck kills seven in Alabama, US

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Six applicants to join the Alabama Department of Corrections and their driver have been killed after the prison van they were traveling in collided with an 18-wheeled truck. Both vehicles burned at the scene.

Andrew David Carter, who was driving the Lewis Trucking Company truck with a cargo of treated lumber, escaped the wreck without serious injury. He was briefly hospitalised and released. The deceased have been identified as driver Rodney Kelley, and applicants Julius Erving Douier, Lionel Michael Moore, John Henry Foye Jr., Brandon Jamaal Anglin, Henry Louis Simmons, and Derrick Lamar Ivey. The oldest victim was 45 and the youngest nearly 19.

The wreck occurred on Alabama’s Route 82 near Bullock County, having left Bullock Correctional Facility to travel to Draper Correctional Facility in Elmore County for mental and physical fitness tests on the passengers before employment with the state.

The road was closed for eight hours while bodies and wreckage were recovered. As well as the van and the truck cab, part of the trucks cargo and several hundred square feet of nearby timber land were consumed by the fire. An investigation is ongoing, but it appears that the truck crossed the center line and there are no skid marks present.

The relatives of the victims will be offered counseling by the Department of Corrections.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Smoking: Good For Your Business’ Health

Submitted by: Iain Mackintosh

So, whether you love or hate the UK s smoking ban, it seems to have stuck, and the majority of the country seems to be in favour. Sorry smokers, but the smoking ban isn t going away anytime soon. But the cloud of thick smoke hanging above office entrances around the country does have a faint silver lining to it it opens the door for some excellent social opportunities! The exile of smokers has led to a sense of solidarity and joint state of exclusion that is the perfect breeding ground for friendship and business networking!

If you are based in a large office block like ours, the chances are you will not have met the majority of your neighbors. If you can t meet them, then it s impossible to get your foot in the door and make business allies. Fortunately, there seems to be at least one smoker in every office in the country, and as the hourly cigarette ritual occurs, the chances of meeting others is far greater now they are all forced outside. The smoking chats are ideal business networking opportunities.

Assuming you do manage to meet someone who should be interested in using your services huddled in the cold smoking chat outside your office, what should you do to ensure you grab their attention? Here are 5 top tips to business networking which should supplement their nicotine craving with a desire to become your customers:

1) Find a natural opening

This is the beauty of the UK smoking ban. If you are both outside puffing on a cigarette then you have at least one thing in common thus sidestepping the most awkward part of business networking at conferences. Combine this with the fact you both most likely work in the same building and you re away with a natural opening!

2) Have your business introduction primed and waiting

If you get the smoking chat going, it s only a matter of time before your job and company come into discussion. So what do you do? is something of a staple inquiry in the small talk arena and it s a golden opportunity for you. Be succinct and interesting the more long winded you are, the longer delay before your next nicotine fix! If you get a tell me more or some follow up questions, you know you ve succeeded and the business networking can begin in earnest.

3) Be enthusiastic and positive about your business

Sure, nobody is thrilled to be talking about their job all the time, but your (long-term) aim here is to sell. If you don t sound interested, positive and confident about what you do, then there s no reason for them to follow up with questions and ultimately business inquiries. This should all be part of your business networking preparation to make the talk engaging, however when you do deliver your spiel, be sure to speak clearly and sound as keen as it s natural to do so, without being off-putting!

4) Listen carefully

You know those gaps in your smoking chat where the other person is talking? Make sure you listen carefully and aren t thinking about what to say next or anxiously reading the side-of-packet health warning! This is foremost a relationship, and you can t maintain one effectively if you aren t listening to them properly. Also, they may mention something which you can bring up again later, either to prove you were listening or to link your business to theirs. Ignore this one at your peril.

5) Remember to follow up

This is crucial. If you make a contact who wants to hear more about your business, don t let the opportunity slip away. If you promise to send over more details about your products and services, be sure to do it as soon as you return from your smoking chat. If you say you ll drop by their office to discuss things further, make sure you get around to it, otherwise your future smoking chats will be awkward and you will have lost a valuable business associate. They say smoking kills, but not following up your smoking chat will kill your new friend s interest far quicker!

Not every smoker you meet will make an ideal business networking partner of course, but the time spent pandering to your addiction is far more valuable if you manage to get extra custom for your business in the process. Hey, the extra business you drum up may mean it s actually more costly to give up your smoking habit!

Report urges Kenya to ban plastic bags

Wednesday, March 9, 2005File:Plastic bag stock sized.jpg

They are cheap, useful, and very plentiful, and that is exactly the problem, according to researchers. A report issued on Feb. 23 by a cadre of environment and economics researchers suggested that Kenya should ban the common plastic bag that one gets at the checkout counter of grocery stores, and place a levy on other plastic bags, all to combat the country’s environmental problems stemming from the bags’ popularity.
