Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

Friday, August 27, 2010

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.

Water For Home Use Must Be Treated With A Conditioning System

byAlma Abell

As a homeowner, you are using a large quantity of water on a daily basis for your own personal needs. This includes a wide range of uses such as showering, drinking water, heating your home, and running the plumbing. It only follows that the water you use should be of the highest quality and free of any contaminations. However, some of the most frequent complaints by homeowners are the mold that builds up in the bathroom, the lack of hot water, and a water heater that is not working properly. Many commercial solutions only exacerbate this problem further by using harsh chemicals that do not promote the longevity of the equipment in your house using water on a daily basis. Additionally, these chemicals can be extremely harmful for human health in the short term and in the long term.

How Can This Problem Be Fixed?

Homeowners should invest in an ecofriendly conditioning system that will treat the water for home. This refers to equipment that is environmentally friendly and will not use an excess of energy that will significantly increase the monthly hydro bill. These types of products are usually salt-free, and will act to remove hard water from your home. Hard water has a very high concentration of minerals such as limescale, and deposits these minerals very easily onto the surface of the water-powered equipment in your home.

Another key feature of this type of equipment is the fact that it requires no maintenance at all once it is installed. This means that you will not have to spend a lot of money in hiring a professional for frequent inspections. Although purchasing this equipment is more expensive in the short term, in the long term course of things you will save much more money.

Where Can This Equipment Be Bought?

You should not shy away because of a high price. Do not let that one factor alone deter you into buying a product of poor quality. The treatment of water for home is a serious matter, and is not to be taken lightly. You should be seeking out companies that have, at minimum, a solid decade of experience in the industry that has led to proven results for homeowners who have had the same problems as you. Recognition by various trades is another key thing to look for, as these are third-party unbiased companies that will not leave paid reviews for companies.

Finally, you want to make sure that these companies are easily accessible by phone or email. The contact information should be readily available on their website, and somebody should be able to answer any questions you have. If you still have doubts, ask other people in your local area for the equipment they have used that has worked for them and solved the problems they were having.

Mother of slain Army Ranger calls for removal of General McChrystal from committee

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Mary Tillman, mother of Pat Tillman, the former professional football player and U.S. Army Ranger who was killed by friendly fire on April 22nd, 2004 outside of the village of Sperah in Afghanistan, has objected to President Barack Obama’s recent appointment of General Stanley McChrystal to chair a commission on military families.

Immediately after Tillman’s death, the Army announced that his death was a result of enemy fire. General Stanley McChrystal authorized the Silver Star to be awarded to Tillman posthumously with the citation supporting the claim.

Reports indicate that McChrystal wrote a memo to President George W. Bush stating “if this becomes public this could be an embarrassment to the administration,” referring the the actual details of Tillman’s death. Mary Tillman believes there was an effort to cover up the true details of her son’s death.

Mary Tillman believes McChrystal’s handling of the circumstances surrounding the death of her son, makes him unfit to chair a commission that is intended to handle issues regarding military families.

The commission is a low-level White House advisory panel, created by first lady Michelle Obama and second lady Jill Biden. General McChrystal’s appointment to lead the commission comes less than a year after President Obama fired the former special operations commander from his position as the top commander for all forces in Afghanistan. General McChrystal was fired at that time for making comments to reporters critical of the President and civilian leadership.

General McChrystal could not be reached for comment.

In a recent press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked what the White House’s response was to critics who say General McChrystal should not be on any sort of advisory committee having to do with military families. Carney responded by saying, “[T]he president feels strongly that General McChrystal is the right person to help lead this advisory committee on this vital issue.”

Hackers attack Church of Scientology website

Sunday, January 20, 2008

Wikinews has learned that according to an Internet posting made just over 24 hours ago, the Church of Scientology‘s website is being attacked by hackers, causing the site to shut down.

The attack was launched on Wednesday by a user labelled “Anonymous”, on the website “Insurgency Wiki”, a spinoff of 4chan. The “History” section of the site explains, in a satirical fashion, that the incident was prompted by the Church of Scientology’s attempts to remove a promotional video featuring Scientologist Tom Cruise from YouTube. Though YouTube is complying with the Church of Scientology’s requests to take down the video, other sites such as Gawker.com have stated that they will keep hosting the video.

So far, it’s the Internet: 1, Scientology: 0. But it’s a long game.

Writing in a blog post, Matthew Ingram of The Globe and Mail dubbed the ongoing conflict involving the Church of Scientology’s attempts to remove the Cruise video from the Internet: “Scientology vs. the Internet, part XVII”. He characterized the conflict between the Church of Scientology and anonymous posters of the Cruise video as “another small skirmish in a war that Scientology has been waging for almost 15 years, since the early days of newsgroups such as alt.religion.scientology, which posted internal church documents in 1994. Lawsuits have been filed, mailing lists have been shut down, homes of discussion group participants have been raided and their computers seized — an all-out war.”

Prompted I think by the Tom Cruise video, a new obsession is taking hold on the internet. An insurgency against The Church of Scientology.

One poster admitted to being a part of the effort, writing in a blog post “I have myself, as per instructions, loaded up Gigaloader and started bombarding the Scientology homepage. Theres [sic] something in the hilarious anarchy of the net that produces these ‘events’ every now and again.” The poster wrote that “Prompted I think by the Tom Cruise video, a new obsession is taking hold on the internet. An insurgency against The Church of Scientology.”

“Someone emailed me earlier today talking about a tool a group’s been using to attack the scientology website. It’s an interesting tool, created to overload/create malformed strings and crash a website’s database,” said the post by an unknown author on pigmy.

The Church’s website is currently unreachable. Some individuals reported that when they are able to reach the site, all they get is a message stating, “The word scientology means search for truth…”. As of 15:11 GMT the site was accessible again, but only loads at relatively slow speeds, and by the end of the day Saturday the site was not loading at all.

Posts on the message board for the Scientology-critic site Operation Clambake from Friday theorized that a denial-of-service attack had occurred, and wrote that as of Friday the Scientology.org site was either not loading at all, or loading very slowly. Critics of Scientology at the Internet newsgroup alt.religion.scientology were critical of the attacks to the Church of Scientology website, with one poster writing “How can people look at both sides if one side is gone?”

Traffic to the Scientology website had already increased 18-fold prior to the attack, following increased attention after the Tom Cruise video appeared on the Internet. At that time, one in three visits to the site came from BBC News, and the website increased to number 3 in the company Hitwise UK’s Lifestyle-Religion category.

Egyptian treasures found in ancient tomb

Friday, March 13, 2009

A team of archaeologists excavating an Ancient Egyptian tomb have discovered golden jewelry in a recently-discovered lower chamber at the Valley of the Kings burial site in Luxor, Egypt.

Two golden rings and five golden earrings were found in the tomb of Djehuty, an 18th-dynasty official of Queen Hatshepsut, and were probably the property of Djehuty or his family.

The discovery was announced by Farouk Hosni, Egypt’s current Minister of Culture.

Djehuty was overseer of the treasury and overseer of works for the Queen. Hatshepsut reigned approximately 1479–1458 BCE. Djehuty was responsible for managing the huge amounts of precious goods brought in from Egypt’s military expedition to Punt in the Horn of Africa and the vast building projects of Hatshepsut which have made the female pharaoh one of the most-remembered of any from ancient Egypt.

Djehuty died after Hatshepsut did, sometime during the reign of Thutmosis III. Both Hatshepsut’s and Thutmosis’s names are recorded on the tomb. In a fashion typical of ancient Egyptian rivalries, Hatshepsut’s name was partly obscured on the monument over the tomb sometime after the queen’s death.

The team, led by José Manuel Galán of the National Research Center (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), in Madrid, Spain, had been excavating the tomb, designated TT11 and located in the necropolis of Dra’ Abu el-Naga’, since 2002. While much of Djehuty’s funerary equipment was lost to fire in antiquity, the lower chamber of his tomb was concealed at the end of a three-meter shaft and discovered at the end of 2008.

A superficial description of the tomb itself was recorded almost two hundred years ago by 19th-century French Egyptologist Jean-François Champollion, rubble blocking the entrance hindered excavation until the 21st century. In that time, emphasis in Egyptology has changed from the cataloging of treasures to the investigation of ancient culture, life and religion.

Since excavation began, Djehuty’s tomb has yielded a number of surprises. It was discovered that the tomb was re-used repeatedly up to and during the Greco-Roman period. There is an unusual face-on depiction of pharaoh Thutmosis III hunting ducks, and the mummy of a young, bejewelled, as-yet unidentified woman.

In 2007, 44 preserved bunches of flowers thought to be from Djehuty’s funeral were found in the site. In their 8th season of excavation, which ended on February 22, 2009, the team also found considerable evidence that below Djehuty’s tomb is a network of burial sites from the 11th dynasty, four thousand years old.

The lower chamber also displays passages from the Egyptian funerary text the Book of the Dead on its walls and a colorful mural of the goddess Nut, an embodiment of the heavens, on the ceiling. The names of Djehuty and his parents were also intact in the second chamber; the names were defaced in the previously-known first chamber of the tomb, which had also been looted.

According to a press release from Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, Djehuty’s tomb is only the fifth known decorated burial chamber of the 18th dynasty. An additional unusual feature of the tomb is that its upper chamber is decorated in relief, rather than simply paint. When the excavation is completed, Dr Galán’s team plans to open the site to the public as the carved stoneworks will not be destroyed by tourists’ activities as paint would.

The identification of Djehuty is a complicated one, as a number of officials of the 18th dynasty bore the name, including a general and several governors. The name itself is an alternate transliteration of the name of the Egyptian god usually written in English as Thoth.

Bedroom Sets: Beauty And The Beast

By Ben Weissman

Choosing a new bedroom set can be difficult, especially when you start focusing on how important your bedroom really is! The door to the bedroom is usually the first to be shut when company is over and the bedroom itself is the last to be shown to trusted friends and family. Some people take years agonizing over which bedroom set to purchase, while others do a few moments of browsing and come up with the perfect style for them. So how do you choose what type of bedroom set to purchase?

Here are a couple of criteria you can use for choosing the perfect bed. You may have other factors that you use, but let’s try to find the perfect marriage between form and function, comfort and beauty, aesthetically pleasing and a great place to get a good night’s sleep.

Functionality

There is one big question you need to ask yourself about getting a new bedroom set: do you want functionality or beauty? A functional bedroom set would include pieces that allow you to move around easily. They’re not fussy or overly ornate and generally use straight lines. Some wood bedroom sets are made for functionality over beauty. One classic type of bedroom set that is seen more for functionality than for beauty is the missionary style bedroom set. These sets are known for straight lines and clean looks.

Missionary bedroom sets are reminiscent of a time when people had very little. Some families had very little on purpose, others were struggling just to get by. When you see the missionary style bedroom sets, the first thing you may think of is the Amish. These bedroom sets are truly like something that you would find in a devout Amish person’s home. In all likelihood, the set in an Amish home was handcrafted by their ancestor. Missionary pieces are built for functionality, but are beautiful too, in their own clean-lined way.

Beauty

Some bedroom sets are made more for beauty than for functionality. After all, how functional is a canopy bed? Do you really need to have cloth stretched out over you in a perfectly dry room? Of course not! A canopy bed is, however, extremely beautiful. Most bedroom sets that are created for beauty have curving, fluid lines. They are often ornate pieces that took hours, or even days to create, and are always a focus piece in any bedroom.

A four poster canopy bed is one example of an ornate piece of bedroom furniture. The large posters stretch up, almost to the ceiling, and a flimsy canopy decorates the top. Some people choose to put silk scarves through the winding canopy top instead of the traditional canopy, creating a sensual and mysterious air in the room.

If you’re lucky, you can make functionality and beauty meet. Bedroom furniture that is functional as well as beautiful is priceless and can swiftly become a family heirloom. Some metal beds and metal day beds are the perfect blend of function and style. They have fluid curves, yet don’t call too much attention to themselves, instead being happy to sit on the sidelines, ready to do the job they were designed for.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Bill & Rebecca, owners of Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, a BDSM dungeon.

Wikinews interviews You-peng Wang of Taipei Electrical Commercial Association

Sunday, November 11, 2007

Besides becoming a political stomping ground for the Pan-Green and Pan-Blue coalitions, there are other changes from past years of Taipei Audio Video Fair (TAVF). With those changes in mind, Wikinews reporter Rico Shen interviewed You-peng Wang, chairman of the Taipei Electrical Commercial Association (TECA), the main organizer of TAVF, about the 60th year anniversary of TECA and the changes to the show.
